The False Dichotomy of Nature versus Nurture

Psychiatrist and researcher Michael Rutter is concerned about the lack of communication between those who believe genetic influences drive human behavior and those who claim such behavior is almost entirely shaped by the environment. Ritter pronounces both positions oversimplistic and attempts to educate readers in a more realistic perspective. His goal is to "provide a readable, non-technical account of what is involved in the various possible ways in which genetic influences on behavior may be important."

Rutter begins by describing the history and accomplishments of genetic research and how both actual findings and misunderstandings have generated controversy. He demonstrates that genetic effects are probabilistic rather than deterministic. Both genetic and environmental factors can either increase risk or offer some protection against development of a disorder or behavior pattern. But they do not determine it. He reviews the research methods used to investigate genetic influences on behavior and summarizes research findings that shed light on both genetic and environmental influences on a selection of mental traits and disorders. He closes with an integrative discussion of how "genes operate through the environment" by increasing chances individuals will encounter certain environments and will be susceptible to influences in those environments.

This book is not always an easy read, but it is a straightforward treatment of a complex subject that is worth understanding. It is recommended to readers who work in education and other disciplines where genetic influences on behavior are often discussed casually and without access to research findings from behavioral genetics.

Best Introduction

This is arguably the best introduction to the complex world of how genes affect human personality and behavior. It is far from an easy "read" and doesn't shy from the use of technical terms (an advantage for those who wish to go further but an impediment to more casual readers). The prose is somewhat leaden. Still -- it is a remarkable achievement. Rutter is a distinguished psychiatrist who has made major contributions to our understanding of psychiatric disorders and is well respected across the psychology-psychiatry divide.
The book accomplishes several goals. First, it provides a limited but useful survey of what is presently known about the genetic basis of mental disorders and personality/intelligence. Second (and more usefully) it discusses the logic of genetic causality and surveys the various methods used to uncover same. Third (and most importantly), it provides a balanced and nuanced discussion of all the ways that genes and environmental factors interact to produce human psychology. As such it provides a useful corrective to those who believe that genes are destiny and that there is a "gene (or genes)" for most human characteristics. The human genome project and associated research has now made it clear that the various ways genes affect humans are far more complex than anyone realized even 20 years ago. Unfortunately this has not become part of the popular wisdom, and so this book becomes essential reading for those interested in this fascinating and important topic. The study of psychology will increasingly be dominated by genetic science (and its sister discipline of neurobiology) and lay people as well as professionals will need a book such as this to help them on their way to a more complete understanding of how this is likely to play out. There are many books on the genetic underpinnings of psychological processes, but most are either simplistic or too technical for general consumption. An exception would be the books by Matt Ridley. The Rutter book is less accessible that the Ridley books, but more technically accomplished.

A Brilliant Book by a Brilliant Individual

I was once in the cafeteria having lunch with some friends, when Sir Michael Rutter came in for a moment to get a sandwich. One of our group leaned over and said, "That man's written more books than I've read. See, he doesn't even have time to sit down for lunch!"

It was said in jest, but my friend had a point: Mike has been re-creating several fields of psychology and psychiatry since the 1960s. Although best known as a child psychiatrist, he has made enormous contributions to the study of child development and the interactions between genes and the environment.

This book is a superb summary of some of the enormous changes that have transformed our understanding of genetics over the last two decades by someone who has been in the thick of it, as an investigator, mentor and teacher.

One of the biggest problems in psychology has been the polarization between the proponents of Nature and Nurture. Most folk psychology is driven by the notion that human behavior can be explained by a combination of learning and the environment, and largely neglects the role of genetics. So in that view, an alcoholic develops the illness because he observed alcohol abuse in the family, and genetics have nothing to do with it. The other extreme view is that the whole of human behavior can be reduced to sets of interacting genes. Both positions are unhelpful. The tension between psychosocial researchers and behavior geneticists has been sustained by the different theoretical perspectives that the two use to describe similar concepts. Most experts now understand that the key to understanding problems like the susceptibility and resilience to mental illness is to understand the interaction of genes and the environment over the lifespan of an individual. This book shows exactly how we can do that.

What this book does, and what makes it unique, is that it presents in non-technical language some of the fundamental assumptions that underlie much of the biological, psychological and social research into human behavior. Mike treats us to a short account of modern genetic concepts, illustrated how genes may influence behavior, and also highlights the limitations of simple genetic explanations.

There are few examples of physical or psychological illness that can be traced to a single gene or to a single environmental event: the vast majority show clear evidence of both genetic and environmental influences. Temperament, cognition and mood all have genetic and environmental contributions. What will surprise many readers is that some socially defined behaviors such as criminality and divorce also have genetic and environmental components. Some genetically influenced behaviors affect the extent to which individuals are exposed to environmental risk. We might think of people who do extreme sports or smoke. Another example would be where a parent is genetically predisposed to antisocial behavior, and his behavior disrupts the normal functioning of a family. This is turn would contribute to a child's risk of developing antisocial behavior.

Genes may also contribute to a person's vulnerability to environmental stress. There are genes that increase a person's risk of developing, but only if the person is exposed to certain types of stress.

The notion that genes "cause" behavior - genetic determinism - is all but dead. Genes have indirect effects on behavior that are largely mediated by the environment.

If you have any interest in understanding how genes and the environment affect human behavior, you will find a goldmine of fascinating information in this highly readable book.

Schalow (Univ. of New Orleans) and Denker (independent scholar) offer the second edition of a very valuable work for English-speaking Heidegger scholars. Its publication follows by ten years the first edition by Denker (CH, Dec'00, 38-1890) and marks the continuing growth of interest in Heidegger's philosophy. As a German thinker, Heidegger remains, despite his detractors, the most original philosophical thinker of the 20th century. The dictionary serves principally the English-reading scholar, although a helpful list of book-length writings by and about Heidegger in English, Italian, German, and French is included. In addition to the 266 pages of the dictionary itself, featuring 600 important terms and topics translated into English, the volume offers a 5-page "Chronology of Events and Writings in Heidegger's Life" and a 43-page prose introduction to his life and major writings. The bibliography (p. 355-427), however, is the most impressive and useful part of the volume. It contains a chronological list of all of Heidegger's writings, and books about Heidegger's philosophy. One fateful day, he is left behind by his human family and thus must go out into the world to find a new place. It's a treacherous journey, but Otto finally ends up at the city library, where he discovers a whole group of "book creatures" who, like Otto, come to life and love to have adventures. At its heart, this British import offers the fanciful premise of miniature storybook characters coming alive and exploring together. There are, however, too many unanswered questions about his situation: Why was his book left behind? Why doesn't he return to the book's pages upon his abandonment? Why doesn't he discover the existence of other book characters from other books at his initial residence? The art is airily appealing, featuring muted watercolors framed by thick, casual black outlines that lend a softness to Otto's quest. Otto is depicted as about the size of a mouse, and the illustrations are particularly good at portraying the daunting scale of the big world around him. Otto usually lives as an illustration of a book, but when no one is looking, he comes to life. All is usually well when Otto explores the house-he can read other books, poke about the house and even type out a story on the typewriter. But when the bookshelf is cleared and the books placed in boxes ominously marked "ship to," little Otto is separated from his book and must go out into the world alone. Drawing with ink-filled pipettes and watercolor against extensive white space, Cleminson's emotional illustrations show just how lonely and tiny Otto is out in the world. On the inside, he is a comfortable, confident size, but out in the world, he is nearly lost in urban hubbub. Young readers will enjoy locating the tiny Otto and will identify with his fear and worry, especially when he is forced to take refuge in the darkness of a coffee cup, alongside an apple core. What if??

I have been a fan of this author/illustrator for quite some time. Her book The Magic Box has been a story time staple for me since its release. My expectations for Otto The Book Bear were sky high, and luckily, this charming book did not disappoint. It tells the story of Otto, a bear who lives in a book "on a shelf in a house..." who has a very unique talent. Otto likes to step out of his book and explore! All is well and good until one day Otto is left behind. He doesn't like being alone, so he sets off on an adventure that eventually leads him to a new home where he finds some rather unexpected friends.

I've seen plenty of picture books which detail what happens when book characters come to life, teddy bears become animated, or a child's doodles jump off the page ready to play. The characteristic most of these books share is that when the characters hop out of a child's imagination, they are larger than life. A beloved character becomes a giant playmate, ready to protect or entertain. In this case, Otto steps off the page on his own, tiny in a world of giants. Children don't really play a role in this story, other than at the beginning and end when they are seen enjoying Otto's storybook. The reader truly feels that they are witnessing something special that no one else can see. This perspective leads to some great storytelling as we follow tiny Otto to his ultimate destination - the library!

The perfect length for preschool story time, kids will also delight in the charming illustrations that depict Otto doing things like practicing his writing on a giant typewriter, reading his favorite stories, and trying out the librarian's date due stamps! They will smile as they see Otto peering up at what seems like a gigantic shelf of books, wonder at his bravery as he travels along rooftops and roadways, and grin along with him as he discovers new friends. Cleminson's thick lined, simple depictions of Otto in no way diminish his expressiveness, and only add to his charm.

This is a wonderful choice for any young child's personal collection, and is simply a must have for any story time leader or preschool classroom. I will admit that the little kid in me gasped just slightly when I first saw Otto step out of his book. Point to any kid who enjoys a good story, and I guarantee that at some point that kid has wondered "what if book characters could really come out of the book?" Cleminson does a wonderful job of answering that question for the preschool crowd.

a must for library collections

This book is charming - perfect for a read aloud story time. The illustrations are whimsical and the bear's adventures provide just enough interest before the happy ever after ending (which will warm any librarian's heart!). Children will warm to the bear's efforts to find a welcoming home.

Beautiful Read!

What I liked about this book: I LOVE this book. In fact, this might be my new favorite picture book. It's about a bear and a book - two of my favorite things. The illustrations are brilliant. They look like a combination of either pen and ink or water color. I wouldn't mind having them framed for my library walls. Young children will love the idea of a book character coming to life at night. The happy ending makes it an all around good read. This is an excellent read aloud. I will be ordering this for my school's library.

What I didn't like about the book: I absolutely LOVED it all.

Recommended for pre-school and older.

Well, it's a great diet that has changed my life, but...

First and foremost, intermittent fasting has changed my life for the better. I first learned about fasting through the website Leangains.com about 2 years ago, which led me to Brad Pilon's "Eat, Stop, Eat" program around the same period. Since then, I've lost at least 60lbs and have kept it off. I'm more active then ever thanks to intermittent fasting, calisthenics and Brazilian jiujitsu. If you're looking for a sustainable nutrition program that is painlessly easy and healthy, then intermittent fasting is exactly what you want.

Having said all that, "The 8 Hour Diet" was [allegedly] stolen from leangains.com, Martin Berkhan's website. He has been writing about the 16/8 fasting diet for years, which in turn has turned the bodybuilding world upside down. He has changed countless amounts of blog and forum members lives with his methods. It's a shame "The 8 Hour Diet" makes no mention of him or his website.

My actual review of this book below.

The book is about abstaining from any calories for 16 hours then feeding for 8 hours every day. One thing I did not like was how the author routinely uses research from alternate day fasting (which requires fasting for 24-36 hours, every other day) in order to support the 16/8 diet. It's possible that 16 hours is not enough time for the body to receive the same benefits as going 24-36 hours every other day would.

Typical of Rodale Publishing, in my opinion, there are numerous grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the book. However, this does not take away from the reading experience; still a decent read (despite being [allegedly] stolen from Martin Berkhan).

In closing, if you're interested in learning more about intermittent fasting before buying this book, head over to the following websites for everything you would ever need to know. If after that time you still want this book, then go ahead and order it.

Great Book

After seeing some of the strange negative reviews on here I had to add my 2 cents! This is a great program that works. If you commit you will lose weight and you will feel better. If you decide to go with this diet approach please know the first couple days are kind of tough but once you get over that hurdle this approach is actually very liberating (no more worrying about points, carbs, fats, calories, magical food combinations...etc etc etc). I took the time to give this a good review because the negative reviews all seem to be sketchy advertisements for similar diet approaches (notice they all suspiciously point to the same website). Don't let the negative "reviews" frighten you. This is a solid program that will work. Of course this concept is nothing new but when you think about it pretty much every "new" diet is a reincarnation of a diet that is already in existence. This book presents the concept of intermittent fasting in clear and concise way and does a great job backing up the concepts in this book with research.

I first read the 8 hour diet in Men's Health Magazine then bought the book. In 4 months I have lost 40 pounds. I exercise and eat sensibly but nothing in the extreme. Weight loss has been steady. It is easy to adjust to fit my schedule. I believe at this point it is a way of life that I intend to follow.

Very Good Book

This book was written by pioneering metal detector engineers who work for, or have worked for, major metal detector manufacturers. Especially considering that it's a technical book written by certified geeks for other certified geeks it is extremely well written and readable, and frequently funny and entertaining. The authors present information with a very human touch and electronic engineers and hobbyists alike can benefit from it.

This book thoroughly covers all of the metal detecting technologies, from BFO to Pulse Induction, search coil design, and just about everything relating to metal detector design and even construction details.

If I had to point out a shortcoming or make a suggestion it would be that the authors were maybe too thorough and spent a few pages debunking dowsing, which in my opinion was a waste of paper. However, that is only a few pages I'm critical of out of the 282 pages in this book and that's only because as part of this review I felt obligated to find a real or imagined fault somewhere in this great work.

Clearly not for everyone, but it's a must-have for hobbyists who are building their own detectors and a should-have for anyone with a serious interest in metal detectors or electronics in general.

ALMOST MORE THAN YOU WANT TO KNOW

This book is filled with classic analog circuits of the sort many Forrest Mims fans grew up with. A careful study of this book will reveal the inside secrets of the metal detector industry with perhaps a slight bit more emphasis on the Tesoro designs (regarded by many to be amongst the best detectors). The math is easy, almost too easy for the average EE, but may be a bit much for some technicians not well grounded in electronics theory. In general I found the book enjoyable and fairly thorough with regards to analog circuitry involved and its integration into the overall MD design. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an electronics background interested in MD subcircuits and integrated packages. A five star colaberative effort between George Overton and Carl Mooreland! Certainly a great education and starting point for those interested in building their own detectors or experimenting with their circuits and components.

This book met and exceeded my expectations. It does a great job walking you through the basics of coils, vlf, and pi circuits. It also has a great appendix which lists tons of patents and papers if and when you want to go deeper into the rabbit hole.

Hypocritical from the beginning

DNF. What really turned me off was that at the very beginning, it chastised other pathworking books for being nothing more than glorified short stories. When I started reading, most of what I found was . . . short stories. Maybe they would mean a lot more if I was actually experienced with pathworking but the way they were told, I couldn't help but feeling this is exactly what I would experience if I did it, as if my own experience wouldn't differ at all.

If you don't know what pathworking is, it's basically a form of meditation used to heighten to your own awareness of yourself. It's a means for seeking meaning in your life. It takes meditation a few steps further and actually puts you into a transitive state where it's intoned that you will witness what it is you're seeking to witness.

I'm not casting doubt on any of this. I got the book because I thought it was interesting. But it's not for beginners in the slightest. The introduction is short and then it jumps right into the pathworking. I wasn't comfortable with it so that was something I didn't like. And the other issue I had with it was its own insistence that it wasn't just a collection of short stories but something more when all I saw was a collection of short stories.

Like I said, if I was more familiar with pathworking I probably would have a greater appreciation for it but since I'm about as noob as they come, I was kind of turned off by what this book offered. I would have liked to know from the back blurb that it wasn't for beginners. If I would have known, I wouldn't have taken the time initially.

Misrepresentation

the product advertised and product sent were 2 completely different things, the Complete 2009 Home Study Kit was in fact only a membership kit that when everything was done ended up costing me $40.00 out of my pocket (even with a partial refund). I believe Amazon should be more diligent to make sure the products advertised match what is being sent and if not a 100% not partial refund should be given.

This is an amazing program that I own and have gone through a few times. I read that some people did not get the correct kit or the complete kit when they ordered from amazon. If you check out daveramsey.com you will see that there are a few different kits available and be able to choose the appropriate one for you.
