About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society, or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the newly opened program in criminal justice at the State University of New York at Albany, earning both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. After completing his graduate work, Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court-certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

What is in my book

I was excited to save money on my textbooks since our school bookstore charges outrageous amounts, but when I received the book I noticed that the back was all wrinkled up. About half way through the book to the back cover, there is a ton of water damage. The pages and cover are wrinkled up and have water marks (at least I'm hoping it was water)

Keep the pump primed

I've read most of Dr. Joe Vitale's books and many more like them! Each one is a good reminder of the level at which I wish to live my life. I do expect miracles and I'm never surprised when one of them appears in a book that I'm prompted to read. This does not disappoint!

Perfect gift for any Catholic who wants to improve their practice of Eucharistic Adoration

Eucharistic Adoration is a beautiful practice that I have always struggled with. The few times I have placed myself in front of the Blessed Sacrament, my mind immedtiately begins to wander. I try and force myself to pray and just clear my mind, but the distractions unfortunately kept coming. I knew I had to find a book to help with this if I ever was going to have any kind of success at adoration. Recently, TAN Books published the Manual for Eucharistic Adoration, and I knew that I had to give this book a try.

The manual is divided into two parts - 1. Preparing for Eucharistic Adoration and 2. Aids in Eucharistic Adoration. It then provides a brief explanation on how to properly use this book. In a nutshell, it says that the first part helps you better understand the importance of this devotion, and the second part provides Scripture, prayer, and texts to help you grow in this devotion. I found Chapter 5: Guidelines for Adoration to be particularly helpful. In this chapter, it clears up the misconception that love, fervor, and devotion are required for adoration. Adoration is an act though, and not a sentiment or emotion. I also found the different meditations and devotions in the last chapter to be extremely helpful, as it helped to focus my thoughts and provided me with words I was lacking.

The Manual for Eucharistic Adoration is a marvelous book that will prove beneficial to veterans and novices alike. It contains a nice blend of history and practical spirituality to help you grow closer to God. It is also beautiful in presentation with Premium UltraSoft leather, sewn binding, and a ribbon bookmark. Probably best of all is that it's small enough to fit into a pocket or purse, so that you can always have it handy if you feel the sudden desire to go to Eucharistic Adoration. I would pair this book with the Manual for Spiritual Warfare and consider getting these books for the recent high school graduate in your life, because college can be a perilous time, and they will need all the help they can get. You could also package them together as a wedding, ordination, or just a birthday gift. Any Catholic will find great treasure in both of these books.

A Beautiful Devotional Book for Eucharistic Adoration

This book is very comprehensive covering the foreshadowing of the Eucharist in the Old Testament, and referencing it with Scripture passages. This is followed by the Eucharistic fulfillment in the New Testament. The book traces development of Eucharistic adoration throughout history There is much to reflect upon. One such reflection is how Jesus changed water into wine at the Wedding Feast at Cana, and later changed wine into His blood at the Last Supper.
This book contains many Eucharistic prayers and devotions, and writings on the Eucharist by saints and spiritual writers. It also covers the teachings of the Catholic Church on this subject.

Excellent introductory book

This is an excellent introductory book to Space Systems Engineering. You'll manage to get an overall idea of the elements that compose a spacecraft. However, I think that one of the previous reviews (the lady who used the book as a text book in a course) is quite right. I don't think it's deep enough for a University course, but if you're reading it independently (as I did) I'm sure you'll find it useful. I'm an Engineer willing to turn my career into space and it gave me good ideas how my expertise could be used in this field. So, if you're a professional who wants to get into this field or even a fan with a good sciences background (Math and Physics, mainly), this book is for you.

Lacks sufficient practical examples

This book is, after all, "systems engineering" which is more about how components fit together to make a whole than about how any one of those components work. This is probably why it comes across to some as a liberal arts type of overview. The fact is, the equations needed to design a spacecraft are shown, but their usage is largely omitted. There are no student exercises in this book and virtualy no numerical examples. To get a complete view of spacecraft design I recommend this book for the high-level view and Elements of Spacecraft Design (Aiaa Education Series) for a component designer's perspective. That book is written at a much more detailed level with the equations this book has plus plenty of worked out examples and also exercises at the end of most chapters. However, it lacks what this book has, which is a view of how everything fits together. Read the two of them in parallel and you should be able to fill in most of the blanks in spacecraft design.

A subtly-rendered masterwork

This is a masterpiece of psychological suspense by one of the great mystery/suspense writers of all time, one who deserves a much wider modern readership than she probably has. The late Ms. Millar, in THE FIEND, has written one of the most subtly suspenseful novels I've ever read. There's nothing tawdry or in-your-face about the presentation; it's all relatively low-key and realistic. But it will keep you turning the pages as much as any non-stop, action-packed novel would. If you like stories about three-dimensional characters and their tribulations, don't miss this one.

A gem of a book

If you like mysteries with deep psychological insight and well drawn out characters, then Margaret Millar is the writer you should turn to. Her husband Ross McDonald earned a big name for himself in the 1950s and 60s but Margaret Millar was the truly gifted writer in the family. The fiend is one of her better books. It is an in-depth examination of aberrant psychology but rather than leaving you with a feeling of disgust and repugnance, it evokes compassion and understanding about the circumstances and motivations that provoke people to behave in certain ways.

This is by far my favorite book by Margaret Millar, the Master of mystery writing. In The Fiend, a mystery with a twist, Millar treads a subject matter never discussed lightly and probably never handled so well by another mystery author -- pedophilia. Be brave! Despite your fear and revulsion you'll be rewarded for your courage.

Migrants in Translation is an ethnographic reflection on foreign migration, mental health, and cultural translation in Italy. This book addresses the legal, therapeutic, and moral techniques of recognition and cultural translation that emerge in response to these social uncertainties. In particular, Migrants in Translation focuses on Italian ethno-psychiatry as an emerging technique that provides culturally appropriate therapeutic services exclusively to migrants, political refugees, and victims of torture and trafficking. Cristiana Giordano argues that ethno-psychiatry’s focus on cultural identifications as therapeutic—inasmuch as it complies with current political desires for diversity and multiculturalism—also provides a radical critique of psychiatric, legal, and moral categories of inclusion, and allows for a rethinking of the politics of recognition.

Kindle Version is Flawed

This review relates to the Kindle version of the book. There are entire lines of text missing in certain spots. When you get to the bottom of some pages, the last line is gone. It likely does not impact your overall experience of the book or ability to use it for coursework but it is a glaring flaw that one should be aware of before deciding between the kindle book and the paperback.

Although his spirited readings ostensibly concern nineteenth-century American texts - Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Harriet Wilson among others - the book asks us to commit ourselves to a nuanced understanding of identity and what it can teach us in the present moment. Borgstrom reads Uncle Tom s Cabin through the character Adolph, brilliantly questioning the non-normative gender concerns of the novel; by the same token, his analysis of Iola Leroy reminds us of how badly many of us have misread that complex text.
