Verbose and Obtuse

I used this book for the first and last time in Autumn term 2006 with 28 foreign students in my Global Finance MBA course. When one wishes to make money by consistently reissuing new editions he has an obligation to update it at least minimally, (The Paul Samuelson Rule). In this case Greed is not good.

Hence, my exasperation when I open the 2006 edition of the book and on the first page learn that the currency of Belgium is the Belgian franc, the currency of Ireland is the pound,(Ireland's curency was never the pound; it was the punt) or that Germany still has the DM. Many of students lost points on a midterm because they thought the currency of Finland is is the markka. Shapiro in 2006 says so. On the next page he fails to mention Monaco; there are a lot of capital flows internationally through Monoco. And on that page Spain still has a peseta.Portugal has escudos.

The book also suffers from wordiness. I did like the key phrases section in each chapter; I thought at least that all key phrases would be included in the glossary but I could find all there. There is a certain obtuseness which I did find perplexed my students sometimes, who did not quite enjoy this book as I had hoped. We would not use it again.

I tried to contact the author by email with several queries but did not experience the courtesy of a reply.

Good Introduction to the Subject, in Some Parts too Brief

The book "Multinational Financial Management" is a good introduction to this rather complex subject. It is written well and contains a lot of examples and historical references. Some of the chapters in the second part are kept a tad too short though.

The book covers the main topics of international financial management, the environment of international financial management, foreign exchange and derivatives market and risk management, financing of multinational corporations, foreign investment analysis and multinational working capital management in 5 main sections.

I found most parts of the text to be very well readable and easy to understand. All concepts are backed up by examples and separate illustrations discussing a real event in more or less detail. This works especially well in the first chapters of the text covering the simpler concepts. Subjects like international monetary systems or country risk analysis (to just mention a few) are covered in great detail, and the required math, e.g. the formulas used for the parity conditions and the Fisher Effect, are illustrated with enough examples even for someone with little or no mathematical background.

The parts of the book covering derivatives is too short and the theory provided does not go deep enough in order to comprehend the more complex examples easily. Trying to figure out the mechanics of Kodak's Zero Coupon Australian Dollar Interest Rate/Currency Swap involving 11 parties, multiple swaps and currencies was no easy task after a mere 2 1/2 page theoretical introduction to currency swaps. There are better books for understanding currency swaps.

Other parts not covered deep enough were the chapters on international project and firm evaluation (covering subject like WACC and CAPM). With just this book, it is impossible to get an idea of the real meaning of these models and techniques. Too many details are omitted that should have been covered. Granted, these are more complex subjects, but maybe the author should have either keep the book focused on the main topics or split the content over two books.

Overall, the first part of the book is very useful, but the more complex subjects are not covered with the depth they require.

Outstanding Finance Text

This book covers a comprehensive range of topics regarding international finance and economics. A good deal of the material covers macroeconomic issues that a country will face but there is even more infomration relevant to decisions and situations that companies must deal with when entering foreign markets. The breadth of information makes this book appropriate whether you want a blueprint for doing business overseas or just want to better understand the impact of global trade.
Shapiro is very well respected as an economist and this book is a good example why. I was fortunate enough to have him as a professor in an MBA program and can say he has an amazing command of the issues as well as the ability to communicate his knowledge very effectively. The writing in this book is clear and concise with a ton of info packed into each chapter. Buy it, you won't find a better text on this subject.

You Can Succeed on the FE: AM EXAM

By reviewing and studying this book, you can succeed on the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination Morning Session. The entire FE Exam is an eight-hour, supplied-reference exam split into AM and PM sessions lasting four hours apiece; the morning session is common to all engineering disciplines, while the afternoon session is offered in five disciplines. Because the FE was formerly known as the EIT (Engineer-in-Training) Exam, many aspiring engineers know it today as the "FE/EIT."

The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam is one part in the four-step process toward becoming a professional engineer (P.E.). It is administered by NCEES and is offered twice a year, on Saturdays in April and October. Graduating from an approved four-year engineering program and passing the FE qualifies you for certification as an Engineer-in-Training or an Engineer Intern. The final two steps towards licensing as a P.E. involve completion of four years of additional engineering experience and passing the Principles and Practices of Engineering (PE) Examination, which NCEES also administers. Registration as a professional engineer is deemed both highly rewarding and beneficial in the engineering community.

Test Format
The FE features two distinct sections. One section, the FE: AM, is given in the morning while the other, the FE: PM, is administered in the afternoon. This book will prepare you for the FE: AM Exam.

The FE: AM is a supplied-reference exam, so candidates are not permitted to bring reference material into the test center. Instead, you will be mailed a reference guide when you register for the exam. You can also view, at no charge, the entire up-to-date FE Supplied-Reference Handbook at the NCEES Website. (Each FE Exam will be administered using the latest edition of the handbook. You can count on your FE handbook review being considerably enhanced by study of our subject reviews and completion of our model tests.) You can also be assured that the NCEES guide will provide all the charts, graphs, tables, and formulae you will need. The same book will be given to you when you sit for the test.

Scoring the Exam
Your FE: AM score is based upon the number of correct answers you choose. Each of the 120 questions is worth 1 point, and no points are subtracted for incorrect answers. A single score between 0 and 100 is given for the entire test (both AM and PM sections), and both sections are weighted equally. The grade given is on a pass/fail basis. The breakpoint between passing and failing varies from state to state, although 70 is a general reference point for passing. Thus, the general reference point for passing the FE: AM section alone would be 35.

The pass/fail margin is not a percentage of correct answers or a percentage of students who scored lower than you. This number fluctuates from year to year and is reestablished with every test administration. It is based on previous exam administrations and relates your score to those of previous FE examinees.

This text is good.

The text is an improvement over prior texts by the REA. All the areas contain more topical material. I've passed AM twice and these problems look good. My concern is the PM which is a bit more slippery. This book alone will not suffice for PM; however, it's a good starter for PM-GENERAL. The Potter text and the sample exams
available with the registration materials provide a better profile
of the PM component of the examination.

Decent Enough

I bought this book (and the PM version) to restore my years-ago university knowledge. I read virtually all of the PM book, and a wide but more random swath of the AM book. I did pass the FE on the first try, for what that's worth.

The good: the questions in the book were of the same type and difficulty as questions on the actual exam. The reviews are decently written, though I admit I don't usually do more than briefly follow worked problems and focus instead on the text. What I particularly liked about the review sections was their independence: I felt quite normal skipping around things that I more or less remembered.

The bad: the book is fat, includes a lot of extra material and, yes, blatant errors. Also, the problems are usually tough to follow, and the reviews assume you have (or had and can quickly recover) a thorough knowledge of the subject. Fluids still confuse me, for example.

Overall I was happy enough with the texts, especially given their price compared to others of the same kind. They restored enough of my memory that I at least knew something about each exam question... and given that I haven't used most of that knowledge for years that's saying quite a lot!

When all else fails...

With five days until the FE, I decided to purchase this book. Given the choice again, I would still purchase it because it gave me an idea of what would be on the test, which is the greatest asset the book provides. In fact, some of the example problems were very similar to the actual test questions. The book does contain numerous errors, however, and the solution explanations are generally inadequate. I felt swindled after looking at the poor proof-reading of the text.
You might be better suited by downloading a free copy of the pdf of the equations given during the exam, which you can find by typing "fundamentals of engineering supplied reference handbook" in a search engine. Since the questions on the AM test are fairly general, look over the examples of the first few chapters of your engineering books.
The book might appeal to some because of its massive size - "If it's this big it's gotta be good." I don't like paying the high price and lugging around this type of large exam review book and would buy a smaller one given the opportunity.

Mark Lester is an experienced grammarian, ESL expert, and professor emeritus at Eastern Washington University. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including McGraw-Hill's Essential ESL Grammar, The Big Book of English Verbs, and many more.

Larry Beason is an award-winning professor and director of the English composition program at the University of South Alabama. Very Nice Resource!

This is an excellent book for providing essential grammar and usage rules. The text is easy to read, and it covers essential grammatical rules. I recommend it.

(If credentials matter to you in evaluating a review, I have a BA in English and a JD (Law). Although I've used several grammar resources, I find this one to be a nice addition to my library. It offers nice explanations of the rules and informative examples.)

Best and most thorough grammar reference book I have used recently!

If you have the choice, don't ever turn down a McGraw-Hill reference material. Recently, I wanted to check to see that my grammatical skills are up-to-date. I first chose a few other grammar books. They were helpful and added some additional commentary, but I really found them to be much too condensed. I recently read "The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage." I wanted to address some of my problem areas, such as who vs. whom and lie vs. lay. This book is comprehensive and provides you with actual tests, techniques, and thorough explanations that you can then apply to choose the correct answers, while extending your grammatical vocabulary at the same time. Sure, other grammar books may say the same thing, but they may not provide the same detail or clarity. Now I know: "Lie" is intransitive and "lay" is transitive. You may want to get a grammar workbook after studying this handbook to apply what you have learned. I haven't seen all of the grammar books on the market so I am sure there are some other great ones. But out of the few I've read recently, I found this one to be the most comprehensive and helpful. The language and explanations just spoke to me.

Another Worthwhile Read

Another good read. Before reading the book, I was already fairly well acquainted with color management. My monitors were/are calibrated by an by X-rite Colormunki Display. I use Canon printer profiles that match my paper and printer and I use Lightroom 5 to edit and print my pictures. The procedure outlined in the book was one that, for the most part, I followed with one huge omission. Despite know about soft proofing I rarely used it. Sure I would look and see what the output looked like but I did not adjust the proof copy to look my edited original. After reading this short book, I am now adjusting my proof copy and attempting to match it to the original and, as a result of this process, I am happier with the final output. The book is as usual well laid and a quick and easy read. I think the author, Mr. Whalley, has found a good mix between the amount and the complexity of information presented. Overall, a great book for a beginner and maybe a few nuggets for someone with more experience.

Just the right length. Quality over Quantity

I have read four or five of Mr. Whalley's books and find his style or writing well suited to the serious amateur. This is me with emphasis on the "amateur". I have always been overwhelmed at the the perplexities and options presented by various software programs and printer set up menus. Two hours with this book - reading it slowly, cover to cover and now I have a very firm grasp of the numerous elements that go into making a high quality print. Thanks so much for exposing these mysteries in such a straight forward and easy to grasp manner. I have felt the same about each of his books and have bought the only remaining two that I have not read and will end this review so I can get started on them. Next up is the book he has on Nix Sharpener.

The only problem with his writing is that I seem be to able to read them faster than he can produce them. From Lijiang China - Photographers heaven.

Great start to learning to print

This is an amazing little book. I've been struggling with my "semi-pro" printer for several years, rarely getting the print that I saw on my screen or that I wanted. There was no question that it was operator-error, but what to do about it? I bought several printing guides, but quickly got over my head with color management, color profiles, and other jargon that just didn't make sense. Then I found this book. Robin Whalley is able to explain complex printing details in a way that shows me what they are, why they're important, and how they relate. He takes things step by step and then summarizes the steps in a workflow that results in that perfect print. Thank you, Robin.
