Dr. Nadine Bezuk is interested in helping teachers help all children be successful in math. She teaches elementary math methods for prospective teachers and conducts professional development for inservice teachers. She’s particularly interested in the effective teaching of fractions. She has taught elementary, middle school, and high school math, along with developmental math at the college level. She is the director of the San Diego State University (SDSU) Professional Development Collaborative, associate director of the SDSU Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education, and active in the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), having served as President and as Executive Director. She has been the author of all 6 editions of Learning Mathematics in Elementary and Middle Schools and has published several articles in journals of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and is a regular speaker at NCTM conferences.

Good Beginning Text - Beware Links

Great introduction to teaching math complete with lessons and ties to the common core. However - the kindle edition has what looks like links to the videos they describe in the book but they DON'T work!

Too technical, look into the earlier edition, it's fabulous!

This is written in more of a peer-reviewed/dissertation format. My students were not interested in reading this edition. I went back to the earlier edition which my students were more than willing to read. Sorry! I LOVE the earlier edition and continue to use it. My students save the earlier edition as well for use in their classrooms...

Book was brand new, which was fantastic! But, when I bought it there was no evidence or sign that it was only available in Loose Leaf. I was pretty bummed about that, since I thought I was receiving a paperback book. Other than that.. great book

Excellent Read!

Buy it AND read it. I'm not a huge fan of self-help books and I only spend a small portion of my "spare" time reading, despite the fact that I own a significant number of books (no problem with acquisition, just reading them). That being said, I have had trouble putting this book down. The writing style is both easy to follow and playful at the same time, which certainly helps to keep my interest. Thinking about it now, I'm not sure that "self-help" is the correct categorization for this book. While I've found aspects of the book to be helpful to me personally, I think the most interesting pieces are the astute observations on life, in general, and how quickly and easily we can be distracted from what truly matters to us as individuals. This book has provided me with a different way of thinking and viewing things - from small, everyday tasks to grandiose ideas. I can't think of a single person that I know personally who wouldn't enjoy reading this book. Most would probably benefit from it as well. Highly recommended.

I'm halfway through Screw the Zoo and already have a page of notes and original quotes! A few favorites: "The reason that self-doubt is so dangerous is that it is at the heart of inaction"; "If your mind is a negative place, your reality will become negative...but if your mind is a positive place, incredible things can happen"; and "We're wired for external validation. We seek it out, and crave it like a drug addict. And just like an addict, if you want to reach your maximum potential, you’re going to need to get off the crack."
McRoberts has successfully explained his concept in understandable, well-outlined segments; I LOVE the lists and guided self assessment exercises. The imperfection list - perfect! (pp 44 & 45)

You guys won't belive this but I have never finished reading a book in my life till now! Sam McRoberts keeps you stuck to the book with his enthusiastic approach in writing by cementing his ideas with quotes of influential people and movies. He dulls the sharp edges of life with his comedic approach while still keeping it real. This book empowers you to look at work and life from a different perspective. "Reality is negotiable "

Good book if you enjoying coding.

I'm not a huge fan of coding, but I needed this for a class, the book itself is well written but no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get interested.

Not the best.....

This is a book I purchase for a college class. If you have a very firm grasp on c++ and are looking to learn data structures you may have better luck with this book than I have. The book is very repetitive on parts that most programmers at the level where they should be learning c++ data structures should already be very familiar with, but when it comes to the new material they are a bit vague. I do like that the example programs from the book are all online and can be accessed easily, however I have found that I have better luck learning the data structures by reading my first c++ book which was on learning c++ from "Hello World" to Binary Trees. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Readable but horrible

Our teacher assigned this text because we all had such a good experience with Savitch's "Problem Solving with C++". This book is however quite horrible. The text goes on and on and on and on! If you only needed a page or two of concise reading to get an idea, this book will make sure that you read through eight pages of unnecessary garbage to get there. Our teacher would assign the chapters as reading, and I would try staying up to 3AM the night before trying to read the very long chapters, and it is ridiculous!

Our teacher even turned on it later. The book breaks rules for good coding in its examples that our teacher had to explicitly point out (and she did take off for those errors in our own programs). I think there is only supposed to be "one entry, one exit" and no breaking out of a program, and the book has other errors too.

The Gold Standard

That's what this book is - the Gold Standard for high end studio design and construction. After you have read Rod Gervais' excellent book and a couple of Alton Everest books, have waded through the Sayers forum and Gearslutz, then come to Philip Newell's book to help tie the loose ends together. Many many options are discussed and you are given some expectations about what those options bring to the picture. For example, isolation techniques and the reduction of sound transmission those options provide. For example: control room design philosophy, how they are accomplished in design and what they bring acoustically when done right. Etc. Awesome resource!

Excellent text, but Kindle version is glitchy

Many of the diagrams are too small/low resolution to be read clearly. The glossary is mostly unreadable, with badly formatted overlapping columns of text, etc. Other than those two beefs, this is one of the most valuable references I've read. I learned quite a bit!

Fascination, Agree or Not!

The late Roy Rappaport should be more famous than he is now. He's one of the scientific mystics of the ecopsychology movement and so it should be. One thing lacking is the next step: If the sacred, ritual, shamanism, language, and symbolic culture all appeared at the same moment, we need more speculation on exactly when this moment was, what brought it on, and why it occurred. The suggestion verges on the mystical -- and in such a brilliant, erudite, well-reasoned (if challenging) book, the mystical would certainly have been earned. It is a tour de force of intellectual engagement if you have the intellectual tools to engage it.

An Astonishing Intellectual Achievement

As the centuries long battle between religion and science unfolded in the 19th century, science became the clear winner in terms of intellectual prestige. But that fight, while leaving science victorious in the realm of the intellect also left lingering prejudices within science towards religion. As science moved forward offering us ever deeper knowledge of the cosmos, life, and ourselves, science also began to ignore its former nemesis. Despite the awesome significance of religion in human life and history, the social sciences have relatively little to offer on the role of religion in human evolution and the reasons for or mechanisms whereby religions tradition are transmitted from one generation to the next.

It's not uncommon to meet fantastically educated people, with strong knowledge in the physical or social sciences, who not only know nothing of religion but seem to insist that there's nothing worth knowing. For these people, human religious behavior is looked at as some kind of quirk or anomaly, an embarrassing hold-over from a dark past that we'd all just hopefully outgrow. Such people tend to comfort themselves with the old baseless superstition that religion is the "opiate of the masses." But considering the importance of religion in human history and the astonishing grip religious belief holds over the lives of billions of human beings, it's probably safe to assert that disciplines such as psychology and sociology are fundamentally grasping in the dark if they are unable or unwilling to seriously come to terms with role of religion in the lives of individuals and societies.

Rappaport's book provides the most thorough and penetrating look into human religion that I've ever come across. Combining insights from an astonishingly wide array of fields, Rappaport demonstrates the role that religion has played in human evolution and how and why humans evolved to become religious beings. In the end, he makes a fascinating case for the role of religion in human life and why our survival as a species depends on understanding that role.

This is unquestionably the most intellectually rigorous and powerful book I've seen on anthropology and human evolution. As the review below by an anthropology student shows, this book is not easy reading and certainly isn't recommended for people with little background in these topics. However, dedicated students of the social sciences who have an interest in these issues should be able to make it through with some patience. Those who do will be richly rewarded. I've read some fascinating and brilliant works on these topics, but nothing I've come across approaches the raw analytic and synthetic power of Rappaport. He truly was one of the greatest anthropologists and arguably one of the greatest social scientists that the United States has ever produced.

"Roy A. Rappaport was one of the most distinguished anthropologists of his generation. What sets this book apart from other anthropoplogical studies of religion is that it is not only "about" religion, but is also a profoundly religious book. The author makes a strong case for what he sees as religion's significance in human evolution and argues passsionately for the reconciliation of religion and science. He suggests that human survival may depend on developing a postmodern science that is thoroughly grounded in ecology. Examining evidence from fields as diverse as history, cybernetics, communication theory, semiotics, ethnography, ecology, philosphy, and comparative religions, Rappaport comes to the conclusion that riual should be the main focus of religious studies because "ritual is the ground where all religion is made." The book provides the fullest analysis of ritual since Emile Durkheim's The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life (1912). It is carefully argued; well reasoned, and precise, and is likely to influence scholars for many years to come. Extensive documentation. Solid bibliography. Highly recommended." Stephen D. As the book shows, this metalanguage can be used as a basis for teaching successful cross-cultural communication, including the teaching of languages in a cultural context.

This book is excellent for those who are interested to know how and why people from different cultures usually express their likes and dislikes, compliments and invitations. You will see what to expect and how to interpret the phrases of your foreign friends and colleagues. The author illustrates speech patters and certain words' connotations that we have acquired through our cultural traditions in a simple manner - you don't have to be a linguist to understand her ideas.

I used many examples in my Introduction to Linguistics lectures with the first year students and I think they really enjoyed them.

The book really makes you rethink everything that you have already learned about people from other countries.

The Forgotten Bentham

What a fascinating book! I had been aware that many of the innovations appearing in Nietzsche's work regarding 'Truth' (i.e., the lack thereof) had been 'in the air' throughout the post-Hegelian Neo-Kantian milieux. One only needs to read Schopenhauer and also FA Lange (see his "The History of Materialism and Criticism of its Present Importance") to be aware of this. However, I was unaware that anything comparable was going on in Britain. When I finally got around to reading Vaihinger ("The Philosophy of As If"), and noticed that he mentioned Bentham (in the Preface to the English edition) as a precursor, - well, I was flabbergasted! I hadn't read any Bentham in decades, and I didn't recall anything at all like what Vaihinger was pursuing.

C. K. Ogden, who edited the English translation of Vaihinger's "Philosophy of As If", is also the editor here and he provides a usefully detailed 150 page introduction. The text of "The Theory of Fictions" was not published in Bentham's lifetime. Wherever there seemed to be some confusion in the text, Ogden consulted the MS. In the Introduction to the present work, Ogden asserts that the "chief defect of Vaihinger's monumental work was its failure to lay stress on the linguistic factor in the creation of fictions." He muses that this would be the next step, - except that the step had "already been taken by Bentham a century ago"!

At this point Ogden then quotes what is perhaps Bentham's most famous remark regarding fictions:
"To language, then -to language alone- it is that fictitious entities owe their existence; their impossible, yet indispensable existence."
Of course, all this illustrates nicely, avant la lettre, the difference between continental and anglo-american philosophy. The neo-Kantian (and, generally speaking, all continental philosophy) is ultimately concerned with the unknowable (for Kantians this was the Noumena), or at least the so far unknown, and thus metaphysics/ontology; while the anglo-american is more interested in the 'merely' practical (the doable and the undoable) and the linguistically 'sayable / unsayable'. To Bentham, the idolator of utility, the examination of fictitious entities is an extremely practical affair having myriad ramifications for our understanding of law, politics and science.

Now, this book is decidedly not your great-grandfather's (or the academic) Jeremy Bentham. It throws an entirely new light on the entire Utilitarian gambit. This book was first published in 1932. I have the 1959 paperback edition before me. Ogden denies that Bentham's contemporaries and commentators ever really understood him.
"Since Bentham himself so clearly indicates the importance which he attached to the Theory of Fictions as an Instrument, it is all the more surprising that his biographers, interpreters, and critics have almost all been content to dismiss it with a contemptuous reference."
(Ogden here excludes only Sir Leslie Stephen, who "in his account of Bentham in 'The English Utilitarians', provides a detached and intelligible summary.")

Again, this is not the Bentham one generally encounters in those 'History of Philosophy' survey courses. But why? Well, the first thing to note is that this text, 'The Theory of Fictions', was not given this form by Bentham. Rather, it was culled from several of the later manuscripts. In his manuscripts Bentham, it seems, was in the habit of "starting afresh whenever he resumed the consideration of any subject from a different angle" so there is a great deal of repetition in these notes. Of course, editing these notes was very difficult. And his editors and collaborators worked on what they thought important. But unfortunately "the material on Linguistic Psychology occupied a peculiar position, and its importance was not obvious to his younger collaborators."

And so it was left to Ogden, a century later, to do the work necessary to bring this material to the world. Whether you merely wish to understand the presuppositions of utilitarianism, or you have an interest (as I do) in the antecedents of our horrid postmodernity, - you must read Bentham on fictitious entities and their utility cum necessity! Also, do have a look at Vaihinger's "The Philosophy of As If" to hear the continental side of the argument for the necessity of fictions.

I should close with a note of warning; I found Bentham stylistically a very difficult read. I give four stars due to style. Of course, this could be because these remarks of Bentham's were culled from manuscripts. However, I think it has something to do with the oratorical traditions of the 1700's and 1800's. At times it seems as if the verbal pyrotechnics that are aimed at spellbinding an uneducated mob are routinely used in all forms of writing too. (I also find Carlyle, at times, quite unreadable.) However, the long introduction by Ogden was very readable. The introduction and Benthams text are almost of equal length.

If one is interested in the notion of 'necessary fictions' I would recommend the following books at minimum:

Opus Postumum, Immanuel Kant (Vaihinger underlines the relevance of this unfinished book to his work. Nietzsche also saw it. Continental Philosophy.)
Bentham's Theory of Fictions, Charles K. Ogden (The book I am here reviewing. Anglo-American Philosophy.)
The History of Materialism and Criticism of its Present Importance, Friedrich Albert Lange (Nietsche read the still untranslated first edition of this book. Continental. But the second edition was translated by Bertrand Russell so it travels well.)
Philosophy and Truth: Selections from Nietzsche's Notebooks of the Early 1870s, Friedrich Nietzsche (Radical Neo-Kantianism. Continental.)
The Philosophy of As if, H. Vaihinger (Continental.)
