Bless the Molly Murphy Mysteries

Welcome back to one of the finest authors of the traditional/cozy style mystery now writing. The award-winning Bowen's Molly Murphy historical mystery series is unmatched in painting a textured, meticulous portrait of turn-of-the-century New York City, and especially the immigrant communities who made it tick. Her sleuth, the "feisty" Molly Murphy is a nuanced character any modern reader can get behind, while reveling in the details of Old New York. And this page-turner delivers, as Bless the Bride pits Molly against the Tong, yep the Tong, while posing the question, "Is Molly meant for matrimony?" Without giving anything away, Bowen appears poised to take the series in an entirely new direction, and I for one am buying a trolley ticket for the ride.

Molly Fits in a Case Before She Marries

It's just a matter of weeks before Molly Murphy is to marry Daniel Sullivan, and she is supposed to be spending time with Daniel's mother in Westchester County working on her wedding dress. But she can't resist coming back to New York City when her dear friends Sid and Gus promise to throw a wedding party for her.

She's also tempted by the prospect of taking on one last case. Lee Sing Tai, a powerful man in Chinatown, wants Molly to find something of value that has gone missing. While the task looks impossible on the surface, she digs in and actually manages to make some progress. But the more progress she makes, the more she begins to regret taking this case. Is there a way she can get out of it, especially after a murder takes place?

It's hard to believe this is the 10th book in this historical series. I just can't believe I've been reading them that long. Don't worry about the series losing its spark, however. The world of 1903 New York city is once again brought o vivid life.

The story was so compelling that I had a hard time putting the book down because I had to know how Molly would get herself out of this predicament. Yet it all comes together in a satisfying climax. In fact, the last 10 pages had me smiling the entire time.

Sid and Gus make more than a brief appearance, and it was great to see more of them. And Molly is growing both in deductive skills but also as a person who thinks about her actions. Okay, so she usually thinks about things after the fact, but even that is a step forward for her.

I loved every page of this novel. Fortunately, the next is already being written. Now I just have to wait until it actually gets published.

strong historical mystery

In 1903, the marriage between private investigator Molly Murphy and NYPD Captain Daniel Sullivan is coming soon. He expects her to behave like a wife and not a detective; his mom also implores her to act accordingly. Shockingly Molly seems to acquiesce.

Wealthy Chinese businessman Lee Sing Tai asks Molly to help him find a missing valuable jade. Although she believes her client is omitting much of the story, she agrees as she rationalizes her promise to no longer sleuth begins after the marriage though she hides her activity from Daniel. Molly thinks Lee is actually seeking his missing bride who ran away. However, she has no idea how a Chinese female who does not speak English hides in plain sight in New York when Asian women are not allowed outside without a chaperone. As Molly searches for the young runaway, she fears she will bring further harm to the bride Lee bought in and brought from China.

This is a strong entry in one of the best historical mystery series on the market. The investigation is top rate as Molly goes from searching for a runaway bride that has her pondering the parallels to her own fate as a wife in which she is expected to give up her freedom to detect. As the heroine conceals her case from her fiancé while wondering whether marriage means being The Last Illusion living In a Gilded Cage, her case turns lethal. A wonderful work

Geometry and meaning is an amazing book. It discusses NLP (natural language processing) and how common geometric ideas and theories can be applied in NLP with often excellent or quite satisfactory results.

The strongest point of the book is its clarity. Widdows has a gift in writing. For a book that attempts to convey so many ideas it is surprisingly refreshing to see that it accomplishes its task with the minimal amount of jargon (if any at all indeed). Besides the main text, the insets with historic or scientific references are very enjoyable as well.

I would have personally preferred some more detail on the methods developed for similarity and distance in hierarchies in chapter 4 (there is only the formulae from Leacock's and Resnik's algorithms) as well as a more in-depth coverage of the word-document vector model in chapter 5. Still these details can be found by consulting the very detailed and carefully compiled bibliography at the end of the book.

With the exceptions of NLP experts who may find such a book rather simplistic and a reference to things they already know, I suspect that the rest of us who want a clear and consise introduction to the field will greatly benefit from it. And at such a reasonable price I dont see why any one interested in the subject wouldnt want this gem in their library.

A related book which makes a case for the application of geometry in the way humans reason and judge similarities between objects and concepts is Gardenfors' Conceptual Spaces--another wonderful book--albeit slightly more difficult to understand.

A polymathic gem

This book is a pleasant introduction to natural language processing (NLP) as used, for example, in the design and operation of internet search engines. In addition, it identifies a number of interdomanial connections, the most interesting one I consider to be that between NLP and quantum theory. Quantum theory is a subject many intellectuals once in their life pledge themselves to attempt to get a grasp of. To increase their chance of success they intend to restrict their effort to the theory's core. Typically, they cannot find suitable educational material. Texts on quantum mechanics appear to inextricably link the imagined core with a large body of structure perceived by the aspirant grasper as excess baggage. In postponing their attack their notion grows that the core is mathematical. Consequently, they resolve to attempt to get a grasp of the kind of math involved. Their intended first move is to learn just enough of it to be able to decide whether or not to immerse themselves in it to achieve a more complete understanding. Accordingly, they want a simple but informative exposition of what the mathematical core of quantum theory 'looks like'. Dominic Widdows most admirably succeeds in providing an essential part of such an exposition.

His masterstroke is using the geometry and the logic used in both NLP and quantum theory in combination with showing how logic can be defined with reference to geometry. Everybody is familiar with language, most of us are with the use of internet search engines, and many remember what a vector is from physics diagrams including forces, velocities etc. All of us know from zero to three-dimensional Euclidian space and some types of curved spaces, e.g. spherical and saddle-shaped. Widdows does a superb job to exploit this knowledge to the full. I found his book valuable both in giving a concise view of methods used in relevant domains and as a means for orienting myself for further study of NLP as well as quantum logic. Another quality of the book is that the material is given a historical background, not profusely but just stimulatingly, and with the effect on the reader that historical digressions in texts on exact subjects tend to have, a synergetic mix of broadening and relaxing the mind.

To put this review in a proper perspective, although it may temper its reader's enthusiasm, I must admit that I possibly represent the perfect audience targeted by the book in the sense of being well-prepared to appreciate its content. This is partly accidental and thus can be seen as a flaw in the book's didactics. To explain, having mentioned in the previous paragraph high-school material necessary for grasping Widdows' topics concerning vectors, geometrical spaces and logic, it has to be noted that this does not prepare for his treatment of logic associated with lattices and concepts. The following implies that I already had knowledge of the latter subject before I read "Geometry and Meaning". After finishing my study of the chapter on formal concept analysis in B. A. Davey and H. A. Priestley's "Introduction to Lattices and Order" (2002) it struck me that Aristotle's attribution of distinct pairs of qualities to four elements might well be the first example of an implicitly defined concept lattice. Having worked out its math and graphics, I supplied the keywords |earth fire air water concept lattice| to Google and was referred to Widdows' book in the topmost result that the search engine returned.

What immediately enticed me to order it was that it was said to have a foreword by Pentti Kanerva. A year after its publication I had bought Kanerva's "Sparse Distributed Memory" (1988) on Douglas R. Hofstadter's recommendation in its flap text, the first part of which runs: "This book, because of its pristine mathematical beauty and its great clarity, excited me deeply when I read it, and I believe it will have the same effect on many others, whether they are ... [specialists in the same scientific domain as its author] or not." Indeed, Kanerva's and Widdows' books share important qualities. There is a positive way to define the most important of these, which, however, is predominantly ignored, being perceived by many as painful and, moreover, disparaged as unproductive. It is the books' demonstration of the superiority, the power and fertility of what I would call their authors' generalistic ability (avoiding use of the more obscure term interdisciplinarity). In my view, science needs precisely this ability of scientists, their use of which makes them polymaths, to be made as productive as possible (realizing that the personal building of the ability depends on possession of a rare talent restricting the number of scientists capable of attaining it). The clarity of Kanerva's and Widdows' books shows their talent for exposition. Its marriage to polymathy spawns the best educational material. In the past two decades, exposition of scientific subjects has acquired improved and novel tools. Widdows light-footedly equipped his text with shaded special-interest boxes and web links. Effective as these may be, they raise the issue of publishing texts in the category of "Geometry and Meaning" completely as web documents, which allow use of a much greater variety of expository tools. Kanerva in his foreword rightly stresses the importance of math in science. But today still none of the major websites collecting mathematical subjects, MathWorld, PlanetMath, and Wikipedia, even remotely presents the best possible quality in knowledge transmission, for example, only very sparsely containing instructive animations despite ideas for them readily suggesting themselves. Perfected with regard to the indicated quality, they could valuably support books like "Geometry and Meaning" as references for its math.

Science education is greatly enriched by books like "Geometry and Meaning". Incongruously, any acknowledgement of this by representatives of the larger societal institutions is at odds with the observation that the building of their authors' generalistic ability is not supported by them, which is particularly apparent in local communities. On the contrary, it is usually discouraged to protect social-psychological interests, every pertinent entity, beginning with family and continuing to include even university faculty, perversely controlling the individual whose aspiration is perceived as deviant. The simple explanation for this treatment is that the ability in question, as its product polymathy, is sour grapes for the exclusive specialists who are a majority almost everywhere. Fortunately, today's internet technology points to the only feasible way to neutralize its effect. Like "Geometry and Meaning", simply publish web links to resources allowing the generalistic-ability builder to educate himself, resources that probe an entire world like that of science, sufficient to provide a solid cognitive foundation, as well as efficient means for orientation.

Keeping science in focus, the proposed self-education resource contains the hint for NLP research to actively involve itself, with its methods and techniques, in a synthetic effort to sanitize the language that is used in science. This effort could also be a response to Widdows' critical remark that (p. 137, footnote) "... the excessive jargonization of all contemporary fields is getting out of hand ... the proliferation of science itself scattering us in a technological Tower of Babel". I imagine a balanced three-part activity consisting of (1) using NLP to rationalize scientific language, (2) searching on internet for self-education resources, and (3) building generalistic ability (not only by an individual but also by workgroups in science). Science is creative, giving it an attractive element of magic. Clear exposition reveals the reality of this element by outlining objects a significant part of whose generation is not objective because it is the unobservable work of the mind. A polymathic scientist can produce superior outlines if he can integrate the various domanial approaches he masters. But only if he combined his integrations with the talent for presenting them in the way Widdows shows in his "Geometry and Meaning" could he present a work of comparable caliber.

Great overview of NLP and geometric methods

This is a great overview of NLP and various geometric methods of linguistic analysis. I do research in the field of computational linguistics and it was refreshing to see how Widdows was able to distill the essence of many important, influential papers and present these topics in an interesting and engaging manner. He includes numerous examples, graphs, and other supplemental material that do an effective job at getting his points across. Those with little formal mathematical background might find some parts intimidating, but if they stick it out, they'll find it to be worth the effort.

Best Place to Start for Studying Revelation

If you want to become comfortable in the world of the New Testament book of Revelation, I suggest you start with this book. Reddish has selected and edited 25 Jewish and Christian Apocalypses in this book that will help the reader become more acquainted with the apocalyptic genre of writing.

I used this book in a course on Revelation while at college. We read this book the first half of the semester, and then Revelation itself the second half. The similarities and nuances that one can pick up afterward is rather astonishing and helpful from an interpretative stand point.

You need not agree with Reddish on all his view points to appreciate this book. It simply helps you to understand better the assumptions that apocalyptic carried with it when you approach Revelation.

An indispensable collection for beginning students

James Charlesworth's Old Testament Pseudepigrapha (volume 1) is still the go-to general collection for Jewish apocalyptic literature, but it is too expensive and overwhelming, both in terms of its bulk and the academic style of its commentary, for the typical undergraduate student/beginner . Reddish's slim paperback really gets the job done for that student. It includes at least portions of every important apocalypse outside the Bible, both Jewish and Christian, in an accessible translation with a pertinent introduction for each book. Its scholarship is solid, but at the same time it doesn't confuse the introductory student with debates over points he/she is not yet ready to address. I've used this text in university classes with great success and recommend it highly.

Brilliant!

Fr. Bretzke is one of the most respected modern moral theologians in the U.S., and yet in this book he relates moral theology in such a way that is very relatable especially to younger generations of Christians and students wishing to understand how moral theology works. This should be on the shelf of every seminarian, including Protestants as it provides a good history of how Christians have done moral theology for centuries. It is clear that Fr. Bretzke has a progressive bend in his moral theology approach, so I would recommend reading it simultaneously with Pope John Paul II's more conservative encyclical "Veritatis Splendor" (Bretzke does make ample references to the encyclical, if I remember correctly). Bretzke also often relates real stories to his times lecturing younger students, which I find enlightening as it highlights where the younger generation is at and challenges the Church may run into as it engages this crowd. Conservatives may be taken aback by his approach, which emphasizes individual conscience over acquiescence to the Magisterium. However, he grounds this tradition in the Scholastics and in Church tradition.

Everything I had hoped it would be. It equips the reader to work through moral complexities while keeping in balance the sources and tensions that shape a situation and its discernment. Living the moral life is hard work and Bretzke does not pretend there is one answer to be found when faced with the big questions of life on the micro and macro scale. He sheds light on the gifts and cautions of all the sources which was very helpful.

Redefining Morality and the True Teachings of Vatican II

In this book Fr. Bretzke teaches complex methods for evaluating the morality of actions - while Catholics who follow traditional teachings would call the same actions "sins" without Bretzke's methods. Putting individual conscience above Church teachings identifies Fr. Bretzke with a breed of theologians who believe the Vatican II Council licensed them to redefine what the Church teaches and to claim that traditional Catholic morality is wrong. People who think the way Fr. Bretzke does never bother to explain why they stay in a Church they believe was so misguided for so long, or how they were granted the grace to understand more than the great saints that came before them.

Fr. Bretzke impugns the maturity of people who base their values on what the Magisterium teaches, using statements like the following: "To sit back and wait for a clear-cut response from any outside moral authority, even if it be the Pope, would result in a sort of moral infantilism."

Fr. Bretzke does not credit the writings of others who defend the Church's traditional teachings, prominently Pope John Paul II.

The following quote from the Pope's encyclical on moral theology seems to apply to theologians like him.
" Certain currents of modern thought ... exalt freedom to such an extent that it becomes an absolute, which would then be the source of values. . . [T]he traditional doctrine ... is rejected; certain of the Church's moral teachings are found simply unacceptable; and the Magisterium itself is considered capable of intervening in matters of morality only in order to `exhort consciences' and to `propose values,' in the light of which each individual will independently make his or her decisions and life choices."

About the Author
Frank J. Fabozzi, PhD, CFA, is Professor of Finance at EDHEC Business School and a member of the EDHEC-Risk Institute. Prior to joining EDHEC, he held various professorial positions in finance at Yale University's School of Management from 1994 to 2011 and, from 1986 to 1992, was a visiting professor of finance and accounting at MIT's Sloan School of Management. He is also Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Anand K. Bhattacharya, PhD, is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Finance, W. P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University, and a Fixed Income Strategist with Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Inc. He has consulted with various financial institutions on issues of balance sheet restructuring and asset valuation.

William S. Berliner is the Principal of Berliner Consulting & Research, LLC, a boutique firm specializing in mortgages and mortgage-backed securities. His primary focus is security and loan valuation and hedging, serving both institutional investors and mortgage originators. Berliner also writes a monthly column for Asset Securitization Report.

Not for Practitioners

I'm a recent college grad (finance) who has passed level 1 of the CFA and sat for level 2. I've been working in securitized products with two others colleagues at a large institutional investment firm for 3-4 months now. Since my colleagues don't have the time or are not always helpful in teaching me (one is chinese), I've bought or rented most of the books on the subject matter and by trial and error whittled down the ones that are most useful for someone working in or new to the industry. I've never written a review, but feel obligated to save others time and money on this one.

Review:
Don't buy. There are better alternatives and little if any has been updated from previous Fabozzi texts. Berliner (one of the authors) comment on another customers review is wrong. He wrote, [the book] "contains material on evaluating non-agency MBS which has never been published before." This is false. The Handbook of Nonagency Mortgage-Backed Securities was published by Fabozzi in 1997.

Better Book Suggestions: Fabozzi's Handbook of MBS is far more useful and detailed, which is evident by the number of pages. It's old (2006), but still way better than wasting time or money on this book.
Mortgage Valuation Models (Davidson) - just released so it's up to date and good. It builds on one of the very important chapters the author contributed to Fabozzi's handbook of MBS.
Salamon Smith Barney Guide to MBS is good, but VERY dated and all of the chapters available on Citi's online research portal for free if you have access.
Fabozzi's Fixed Income Handbook is good reference as well as Fixed Income Mathematics.
If you need problems to practice, Mortgage Backed Securities Workbook (Davidson) has some as does another one of his books. Another book also with practice problems and which would be useful if you're new to Bloomberg is Debt Markets and Analysis (Johnson).

Whatever you do, don't invest in this book if you work on MBS.

not worth your money

Very disappointing. Poorly written starting from the first introductory pages. Be aware of most of the positive reviews, which must have been done by friends of the authors (I guess, since they did not review anything else on amazon). Initial section (on mortgages) is okay, but that part you find it on any financial engineering book. Nothing special or new, except that many concepts and logical connections about why things work in a certain way are already missing. The next sections on structuring are terrible: confusing, and poorly organized (it seems the authors "copied" material without being able to explain things.) If I did not know the subject matter already (a) I would not be able to understand what the book says (some of the very simple concepts are made difficult and complicated for no reason) and (b) I would understand things the wrong way (see the sections on Z-bonds, for instance, IOs, or floaters/inverse floaters), which are all a misleading representation of both market reality and underlying structuring math. Out of curiosity I checked "Wikipedia", which, in a few lines, definitely gave better, more precise and understandable definitions than the ones provides in numerous pages in the book. This book is not worth your money. Another example of a "commercial" textbook, backed by a somewhat famous name, but with no real value.

A must read for those involved in the MBS market

The book provides a very complete overview the residential mortgage-backed securities market and is written by two gentlemen that were arguably at "the center of the storm" at Countrywide Securities.

The book is structured nicely taking the reader from a general overview of the MBS market to a detailed look of the process of securitization through to investing in the end securities.

The chapters dedicated to the structuring and credit enhancement techniques of residential ABS deals a particularly useful to people just entering the current market. The unique perspectives on measuring loan performance and influences on collateral prepayments are also very useful reading.

All in all a must read for those beginning in the industry and a great reference for those of us that might have forgotten a few things.
