This book is targeting readers who are new to electronics. The content is very basic and the language is kept simple - about on the same level with what is taught in some high schools. Math is simple and also very well explained. Any concepts discussed in the book are explained from ground up. You are not just presented with how something works but the author helps you discover it yourself from the very foundation throughout the book why things work as they do.

The book starts to explain conductors and insulators and what current and voltage really means. Next resistors are discussed with Kirchoff's and Ohm's laws. Once this foundation is built, the book moves on to explore the difference between DC and AC and how to calculate impedances with capacitors and inductors before the book starts to dive into semiconductors. The common semiconductors such as diodes, bipolar transistors, and different FETs are explained. The last chapters talk about linear (analog) and digital integrated circuits. The appendix has some valuable information about thermionic (vacuum) tubes which are still found today in high powered radio transmitters.

The book is an easy read and helps the newbie to understand the basics of electronics. The book teaches more than you need for the Technician or General exam but less than what is required for the Extra.

Intro Electronics

"Understanding Basic Electronics" provides a simplified vehicle for learning electronics theory. While this is published by the ARRL and aimed at the amateur radio audience, it provides the fundamentals of electronic theory to work with micro controllers or audio equipment. The math required has been simplified with the use of calculators. Even a reference is provided on using the calculator. While an introductory text, the material includes information on digital devices and circuits and even some theory on vacuum tube operation. In all an excellent text that would benefit from more examples and sample problems to work out.

Best basic electronics book out there

I have read several introductions to electronics over the years, and this is the best I've found. True, there are no experiments, but it gives you a solid foundation of knowledge for moving on to more advanced books. Highly recommended.

Concise information, easy to navigate

We are currently planning our trip to Kauai, so I ordered the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook (the one with all the reviews) and Lonely Planet's guidebook (which had about 30 reviews). Both of those books were well made, but I found them to be overwhelming.

I was at a book store, and I flipped through Fodor's guide. I was really impressed. Concise and straight to the point information. Great lay out. Both my wife and I agreed that for our planning purposes, this was a much better starting point than the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook and Lonely Planet's version. While there is a lot of information in the book, it was much easier for us to navigate than either of the other books we purchased.

So despite being priced higher at the book store, we decided to purchase it right away. The only reason I hadn't ordered it from Amazon before was because of the lack of reviews. If you are reading this, and you are looking for a book to help you plan your first trip to Kauai, then this is the best option in my opinion. I own two of the other top Kauai guidebooks, and I found Fodor's to be the best as a first timer.

Now, once we get to Kauai, we may find that another guidebook suits us better. But for planning our trip, we found this to be the best book.

If I had it to do over I'd buy another guide book

Generally I like Fodor's guide books but was disappointed in this one. Yes, it has beautiful color photos. But guess what?? There are NO CAPTIONS on some of the photos so you don't know where on Kauai they were taken (e.g. page 1, which I think might be a double page spread of Queen's Bath. Also I found that the book is heavy on general items that could be in any guide book for Hawaii (a page on how to snorkel, history of Hawaii, etc) and light on "hidden gems" and comprehensive listings. The index is also very light - and I found it useless when trying to quickly find something. Friends said a book called Kauai Revealed (currently #1 under Hawaii guide books) is much better so I'd check that out next time. Also one called "Hidden Kauai"....

Here are a few of our own tips:

- Drive to Waimea Canyon in the morning before the clouds roll in. Amazing views. Drive ALL THE WAY to the end of the road and then work your way back. Many see the first few overlooks and turn around. The end of the road has amazing views of the Napali Coast.

- Get to go food at Ishihara Market in Waimea at the back deli counter (amazing ahi poke, kim chee, banana nut bread) and take it to Salt Pond Park and eat on a picnic table, amazing view, amazing food, cheap. For a more upscale experience go to one of the Dolphin Fish take out bars in Poipu or Hanalei.

- Our favorite restaurant was Keoki's Paradise in Poipu. It's sort of like eating in Disneyland's Tiki Room, but great food, great service, and fair prices. Also sushi rolls in the bar at Red Salt, hamburgers by the pool same place, nice expensive dinner at the St. Regis at the Makana Grill (ask for outside table, don't overdress, we did).

- Best supermarket is the one Safeway on the island (we went to Big Save and were pretty appalled at the poor quality of the prouce). There is a nearby Foodland that also looks nice.

- Allow plenty of time at the airport on the way back. We had ZERO line but later we saw terrible lines after a flight cancelled. They aren't staffed to handle crowds when things go wrong.

I don't think any of these tips were in the guide book, and ultimately most guide books are just a starting place. The best ones though you find yourself looking at over and over in the car.... this one, we read once and then left it in our condo.

About the Author
Natasha Alexandrova Natasha has taught Russian for over twenty years, first in Ukraine and now in the U.S. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics and a Master’s Degree, and has attended many teaching conferences and seminars. In the process, she has learned much from her colleagues. Before beginning her career as an author, Natasha was a head teacher, observing countless lessons. In this capacity, she provided feedback to the teachers on improving their lessons, and to the students on how they could best benefit from the program. As a teacher, Natasha watched students struggle to learn Russian from complex textbooks that presented too much too quickly. The students had no time to internalize the information. She soon began to develop her own way of presenting the material, and realized that there is a very simple method of learning any language: divide complicated material into simple pieces, and master it step-by-step. Natasha’s years of experience have culminated in a book series of her own – Russian Step by Step. The books are easy to follow, and, at the same time, they teach real Russian. In RSBS books, students will find dialogues from everyday life, exercises to help master those dialogues, and text to help remember them. The series has branches for both adults and children. The adult series is aimed at non-Russian speakers who want to learn either alone, or with the help of a teacher. The many hours of audio included with the books help students to learn proper Russian pronunciation. The children’s series is aimed at bilingual kids, or those whose Russian-speaking parents or grandparents want them to both understand and communicate in Russian. The books take into consideration the specifics of this audience, and make sure the kids have fun while learning.

A good start...

Very nice beginner workbook. I've been looking for something like this for a while now. I like that there is plenty of opportunity to write (since I think writing words helps memorization) Not sure what other workbooks they have in this series for kids. Definitely, hoping there are more to help build vocabulary.

Best book ever

Best book ever! This book has changed my life more than any other book. It has given me the determination to stand firm and not quit. I love all of Joyce's teachings but if I had to choose one that made the most difference in my life it would be this book. Second to it would be Battlefield of the Mind and then third would be Living Beyond Your Feelings.

A MUST have!

All I can say is that I LOVE this book! I originally bought this book for myself, but I started sharing it with my Mother, and she loved it SO just from the tid-bits that I gave her, that I decided to get her one as well. She was feeling down and out, but after reading this book, it encouraged her, as well as MYSELF to study God's Word more, and to PRAY more. It encourages you to seek a more intimate RELATIONSHIP with God. This book will inspire you to do, and to be more, no matter how down you may feel. I HIGHLY recommend it!

This book was the first Joyce Meyer book I ever came across. It has COMPLETELY CHANGED my life. I have read it more than 7 times to really absorb the great life lessons in it. I LOVE Joyce Meyer and have gone on to purchase and read almost all of her books. I started buying them for the public library as a donation, in order to share these positive and life changing principles.

His list of past and present clients includes Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Motorhead, Machine Head, Danzig, Devildriver, Mudvayne, Dio, Queens of the Stone Age, Soulfly, Sepultura, Keel, Steeler and many others.

As a lighting designer, Mark Workman has designed high-impact lighting performances for many music tours, including the infamous Clash of the Titans (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Alice In Chains, & Suicidal Tendencies) in 1990/1991 and American Carnage 2010 (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax & Testament), as well as for many music videos and live DVDs such as Machine Head's Elegies DVD filmed at Brixton Academy in London and Megadeth's Rust In Peace Live DVD shot at the Hollywood Palladium.

Insightful, funny and a must have for anyone interested in the Touring industry

This book really does cover everything you need to know and the straight up and accessible manner in which it’s written actually makes for really enjoyable learning. Unlike most ‘text books’ that send you to sleep this one in chock full of funny anecdotes and lessons learned that keep you turning the pages. One can only imagine how many more stories Mr Workman has!

A Great Read For Fans Of Metal Music

This book is well written, informative and very entertaining. I have been a fan of Metal Music since a friend made me a Metallica compilation tape in 1989 and have been hooked ever since.

While I personally have no desire to be a road manager, I was drawn to this book as a music fan because of my curiosity about how a tour works and was interested in the raw, gritty, honest insider's view that the author's 30+ years of experience provides. Mr. Workman delivered!! He details every conceivable aspect of a tour and delivers the message in terms totally understandable to an outsider like me.

I now have a complete understanding of how much goes in to preparing for a tour, how a tour runs and just how critical the role of a tour manager is. The anecdotes Mr. Workman provides had me laughing out loud, but ultimately the lesson is clear in each one.

I highly recommend this book to any music fan who is simply interested in life on the road. I have not been able to find anything other book that details a side of the music business that one rarely has an opportunity to see.

More importantly, if you interested in a career on the road, this book should be required reading!!
