An in depth study of the Tonfa

This book covers all main aspects of the tonfa, from the basic strikes to its modern use in America as the PR24. It contains two kata, Pinan Yondan and the legendary Hama Higa no Tonfa which are well illustrated and easy to follow. Also, the two kumite (Tonfa vs.Bo & Tonfa vs. Tonfa) are extremely useful in taking the practitioner to the level of actually applying the tonfa to realistic situations. I would disagree with the review below which states that this book has everything one needs to know (ie.all kata etc) about the tonfa. This is not the most advanced level of tonfajutsu, but it will test a tonfa pratitioner's ability and is most certainly an essential book to add to one's tonfa practice.

Good, but error-filled

This book is a good introduction to the tonfa, and the skills associated with it. It includes grips, blocks, strikes, katas, and defenses against various weapons. But the book was careless in detail. For example, of the 9 blocking position photos, 8 were mis-identified in the descriptions. The the main kata described (Hama Higa no Tonfa) includes 168 steps, but again the descriptions frequently don't line up with the photos, and the descriptions sometimes confuse left and right foot moves. A good book overall... but be prepared to interpret past the many mistakes.

World's Best Origami

Let me state, for the record, that I am NOT an origami expert! I can do a few basic paper folds, an airplane, or those cute little fortune tellers we used to play with as kids. But, my kids LOVE origami and as a parent, I love that they have found such a peaceful and creative way to spend their time! Not to mention the fact that they are learning all about angles and following complex directions without even realizing it! I really liked the layout of this book because the author clearly understands that not everyone knows how to do origami!

The first chapter discusses the basics in detail. Choice of paper was an interesting section to read. We always just use scrap paper from the printer, although I have considered buying the pretty origami paper I see in craft stores. The author also suggests things like newspaper although the more complicated designs will do better with actual origami paper. The section on how to read an origami diagram was excellent, with definitions of all the symbols and how to interpret all the dashed lines, solid lines, and arrows that you see in the projects. I never realized that you could start with paper of different shapes. I thought it always had to be a square but the author gives directions on how to make different bases like hexagons, rectangles, etc.

The chapters are arranged by type of design and this is the one thing that I might change about the book. Seeing as I know I am only capable of doing level one projects, it might be nice to have all of the level ones together in one section. However, this is a minor issue and overall, I really enjoyed this book (as did my daughter who is very proud of her origami pig! We are pretty much sticking to the level one designs but they go all the way up to level four and those look extremely challenging but amazingly beautiful.

Become a Master!

Well, maybe not a master, but there are a lot of different origamis that seem complicated but are actually easy! I borrowed this book from the library, and might buy it on my kindle so i don't have to keep renewing it(it's that good of a book). I want to do every one of the projects here! Hope everyone has fun with this book!

World's Best Origami is filled with numerous fun origami projects. I always found origami fascinating but had never actually tried to make anything myself until I received this book. My husband had never tried it either, so we decided to have a little fun and friendly contest to see which "newbie" could make the best piece using this book as our guide. The directions for beginners were really easy to understand and we both had a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend this book.

Listening to a favorite series that I read years ago gives an entirely different "feel" for the story. It took a little bit of effort to get the story to flow, listening instead of reading, but it has been well worth it. I won't go into the story line, as it is an old story, and true fans don't need my meager words to appreciate it.

He does a nice working linking physical processes to sedimentary process. If you are taking Sedimentology at a middle or upper lever you want to take a look of this book.
