I adore this book. I have been a student of Lou Tice for the last year, in that year i've been able to make substantial changes in my life. How? by changing the way I speak to myself. Tice takes you on a heart-warming and encouraging story about how he was able to overcome adversity and create the life that he wanted. Isn't that what we all want to be able to accomplish? He'll show you how to sort your values, be of more worth to yourself and others, help to to define your motivations and more. How often do you tell yourself you "Have to" do something, the next time you look at something that you don't want to do, listen to yourself. Tice tells you how to overcome and liberate yourself, and it begins with the thing you have absolute control over, 100% all the time, everyday all day. Highly Recommended! but look for the Excellence Course too.

I heard Lou Tice decades ago on cassettes! LOVED his program, something about "in Excellence". I thought this book would encapsulate that information but it didn't. However it was a gift and I was told today that this is just what she wanted and needed and that it was the BEST book on goal setting she's ever read.

I hope to buy her the full program that I heard decades ago. After listening to Lou, I literally changed my life! It was amazing and he is so easy to listen to. IF you can find that program get it...I know they sell it at his institute in the Pacific Northwest on CD format for about 80.00. He taught me to think outside the box, and most importantly about the "reticular activating system" within our brains. Priceless information for everyone...takes the woo woo out of the "just throw it to the universe" people and explains in a scientific and proven way WHY and HOW we can get what we want in this life. No woo woo needed, thank you very much.

I can't say enough good about this amazing educator; I listened to the old cassettes many times over and never tired of them. This course had been purchased by a big corporation for big bucks and taught to their sales staff; a wonderful gal I met let me borrow it and I had the tapes copied. Now 30 years later they're dust. Read everything and anything this man says, as he truly is the best in a long line of wanna-be inspirational speakers....where you pay a fortune and forget it the minute you walk out the convention door. With Lou, this won't happen; it will stick with you forever! I'm saddened to hear of his recent passing and wish his family all the best. They sure lost a one-of-a kind.

SMART TALK

I read this wonderful book years ago.It's perfect as a motivational tool in any business field.
Now I'm reading it because of health issues related to having a stroke a couple years ago. I'm finding it to be perfect for patients, like me, recovering from a brain injury. I would expect that patients suffering from other illnesses would also benefit!!!!!
EXCELLENT!! All of Lou Tice's recommendations are right on the mark. His examples and anecdotes help the reader understand & believe that all of the suggestions & principles are doable!

Good, but a layman's book

This book, like all publications from these guys, is a fairly comprehensive field guide for marine species in the region, including some notes about behaviors and ranges of habitation. However, I continue to struggle with its non-scientific arrangement, where species are lumped together according to their morphology (i.e., "large bodies with fat lips"). It may be an easy way for the novice to locate something he/she has seen underwater, based upon physical characteristics, but it doesn't necessarily work well for the more advanced user. Nonetheless, I bought it, knowing what to expect, and it's worth the money.

A Book to Use

This is a book to use, not a book to read.

Sam Horn tells you early on that the book has two purposes. It will help you quickly capture interest and it will help you "break out, not blend in." But that will happen only if you pick a project or idea and then apply the suggestions in the book to improving it and creating a message with POP.

POP stands for Purposeful, Original and Pithy. The book is organized around those three standards.

First comes Purposeful. To help you boil your idea down to its essence the author asks you to answer the 9W questions about it. Answering those questions give you a foundation to build on.

In fact, you'll find yourself going back to those nine questions and your answers time and again. You'll probably change some of your answers. That's a very good thing.

The second, and largest main section helps you make your communication Original. The ideas here will help you turn your idea around so you can see it from the others side and massage it into different forms. You'll learn about the power of alliteration, doing your own take on common sayings, advertising slogans and pop culture phrases.

The third section has ideas for helping you be Pithy. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "pithy" as: "having substance and point - tersely cogent." If it's short and carries a big message, it's pithy.

This was the most helpful section for me. You'll learn how to use alliteration, rhythm and rhyme to make your statement more powerful and more memorable. I've seen all this before, but never in a single place.

The book closes with "Seven Secrets to Keep Their Interest Once You've Got It." This seems to me like a bunch of good ideas that were too good to leave out, but didn't fit anywhere else.

I got incredible value by working through the exercises as I went. As advertised, they helped me craft a POP statement. More importantly, for me, this was a powerful exercise in understanding my business offering and what is unique about it.

I recommend this book to you if you want to craft POP statements that present you or your business or idea to others. I also recommend it if you want exercises that will help you think creatively about what you do.

I've been a professional speaker and writer now for over a quarter century. I found help and ideas here that will help me tell my story and the story of my business more effectively. So will you.

Delightfully delicious

Getting ready for a trip and looking for a light, fun read, I picked up Sam's book off of the B&N table. What a delightful book this is! Sam has much to say about branding, marketing and selling "You." Whether she believes that the people we're selling to don't have much time, or they don't have a long attention span, I don't know. But, she emphasizes the first impression, the first 30 seconds of a conversation, the first "hook." So, her book is a cornucupia of tips and tricks to "hook" them before you say "hello." I will recommend this book to my "Toastmasters" group, where a lot of great speeches are given, but not much thought is given to creative titles or creative intros. If you give speeches, write short articles or write a blog, get this book immediately.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST BUY BOOK!

Horn, on the other hand, has given the world a refreshingly brilliant book in POP without one platitude.

Horn teaches you how to BRAND. How to stand out from the crowd in every way....how to be unique in your industry, your profession and your message.

She educates you. Talent is not enough in today's competitive environment. And she is right. How many talented people do you know?

As Horn says in her book, "We are one of many." So she edifies ways to stand out from the crowd...concepts you would never think of that are BRILLIANT. At least I never thought of them before.

She spends time on how to craft unique slogans, capture conversational catch phrases, how to be relevant. Think about all the information available to us today. With our busy lives what information do we actually remember? What was it about Freakanomics or Jerry Maquire that kept people talking? Horn teaches you to employ the techniques from both---and in the process how you can go from ordinary to EXTRAORDINARY.

How do you follow-up one of the most popular and successful mystery novels in recent memory? It's a tough question, and the very one that was on my mind when I sat myself down to read Sakuraba's sequel to her international bestselling book GOSICK.

Yet, what I discovered wasn't necessarily what I had come expecting.

Let me just start off by saying that I was elated when I heard news of TokyoPop's decision to publish the second novel in this series, The Crime That Has No Name. After having been sadistically tantalized by the preview chapter at the end of book one (something they, quite intelligently, left out of this edition), and having gone for many months without word as to whether anyone would ever get to see the book at all, it was an obvious pleasure to learn of their decision. Not to mention the fact that it came on the heels of news from Japan that the novels would soon be adapted into a television series by renowned Studio BONES.

Now, to get straight to what many of you are most curious about, without further ado: the story.

This time around, Kazuya and Victorique are far from the sea, but hardly far from danger. Spotting an ad in the local newspaper, Kazuya is taken aback at what he finds written. The classified invites the "descendants of the Gray Wolf" to return home for a Summer Festival. No further information is given and the text remains intriguingly vague. Remembering the rumors around the school that espoused Victorique as the gray wolf reborn, Kazuya quickly brings the article to his female friend's attention, curious of her response. Little does he realize though, that by the time nightfall has arrived, he and she will have boarded a train with a number of other strange characters, all of whom have come home for one reason: the ad. But of course, that small piece of newspaper ink will prove to be the least important thing on Kazuya's mind. Because by the time he and Victorique arrive at the medieval town hidden in the mountains and fog, surrounded by the howls of far off wolves, the group of visitors will learn of something nobody expected.

An accusation of murder.

A murder that took place many years before.

A murder that was committed by Victorique's own mother.

Though the town of strange and oddly dressed citizens allow the young girl safe passage into their gates, albeit after a small confrontation, almost everyone's eyes rest on her with suspicion and malice. When Kazuya seeks to understand the situation better, and the reason for which Victorique chose to come to such a hostile place, her response is less than agreeable.

Victorique reveals that she has come to prove her mother innocent of the crime she was accused of committing at fifteen. The only problem is that she'll have to avoid being murdered while she does it.

If the first GOSICK novel was a captivating mystery with dashes of intriguing character development, the sequel is a character-oriented narrative with dashes of mystery. Choosing to concentrate intensely on the hidden motivations and conflicts raging in our two main characters and their lives, Kazuki Sakuraba delves head first into an area of her story that she had no chance to expand upon in the original.

To be blunt, it was an unexpected choice of direction for the book.

Since the novel focuses more on the characters than the plot, the mystery, while enjoyable, is nowhere near as gripping as the first installment in the series. Yet quite surprisingly, it doesn't seem to hurt the story much at all as a result. The author's desire to concentrate on the odd young couple proves increasingly enjoyable, as both are anything but boring individuals.

Just as the original GOSICK had a good number of moments that stuck in the minds of its readers for a long time afterwards, so does The Crime That Has No Name. Heightened tension and death-defying suspense characterize the latter quarter of the story, leaving little room for reading breaks. The ending of the novel is particularly touching, and the last page will remain one of my favorite moments in the series thus far.

Now, unfortunately, I must take a moment to lament. Tokyopop, though having delayed this book for quite a long time, apparently found it not in their interest to do a thorough proofreading of the text before releasing. Though the material isn't littered left and right with typos, there are a few, and they're obvious enough that you'd expect anybody could have quickly spotted them with even a brief glance. Sadly, this is what many readers have begun to expect from the publisher, and as a result it has garnered somewhat of a sour reputation among fans of Japanese literature. However, the grammatical laziness doesn't affect the book in any significant way, and it remains readable.

To wrap this all up, The Crime That Has No Name is a fun sequel to an original that was thoroughly enchanting to many avid mystery fans. Though not as groundbreaking as its predecessor, The Crime That Has No Name does continue the adventures of two very interesting early twentieth century teenagers. And judging from what I have seen thus far, we have good reason to believe that the books in the series that have yet to come will prove every bit, if not more, magical than the ones that came before.

Good story, likable characters, but buy it some where else!

If you have watched the anime, like detective books, or cute characters then this books is for you. I would recommend this and the first book.

But $900?!?!?!?!?! Buy it somewhere else. I don't know why people thing they can sell older light novels for extreme amounts of money.

Finally more Gosick!

For awhile, I was worried that the second volume of the series would never come out, but it's here at last! In this installment of the series, we learn more of Victorique's mysterious past and part of the reason for her excellent mental abilities. If you haven't read the first volume of the series, I recommend that you do because the story references things that happened before. I understand that there is a prequel to the first book that explains how the two main characters met, but I don't think it's been released in English yet.

The mysterious young Victorique, the doll-like genius who spends all her time at school reading on the top floor of the library, has a complicated past that her only friend, Kazuya Kujo, does not understand. The school, as always, is filled with rumor and superstition. The kids love ghost stories, and people say that Victorique is "the grey wolf reborn" (referencing a local legend about a mysterious group of people called "grey wolves"). All Kazuya knows is that Victorique is really smart and temperamental. Then, Kazuya notices an ad in the local newspaper asking for descendants of the grey wolf to come to a certain village in the mountains for the summer festival. Curious, Kazuya shows the ad to Victorique who becomes excited, but the two of them end up in a fight before Victorique can offer him any explanation. Later, he catches Victorique sneaking out of the school at night, and the two of them board a train for this strange village. Before Kazuya knows it, the two of them are caught up in yet another mystery involving the ancient legends of the fictional country of Sauville. Victorique is desperate to prove that her mother was innocent of the terrible crime she was accused of years ago, but her investigation is interrupted by a series of murders. Someone doesn't want the truth to be discovered, and it will take all of Victorique's brains and Kazuya's determination to prevent yet another crime.

I noticed that there are some mistakes in the book, places where the wrong word was used, but I still found the story enjoyable right up to the creepy resolution.

My physical therapist recommended this book to me

I am not a physician, nurse, or physical therapist: I'm a photographer who awoke one morning several months ago to a sudden, severe, and debilitating case of vertigo. It subsided within 48 hours but left me with both impaired vision, balance, and coordination. In my search for answers, I was able to correctly diagnose what caused my vertigo (the hospital physicians as well as my regular physician had misdiagnosed my condition) and found a physical therapy clinic specializing in balance rehabilitation. My physical therapist recommended this book to me; even though it is a medical textbook, I found it wonderfully informative. The extensive rehabilitative exercises in this book both reinforced and supplemented those from my physical therapist; while it took a bit of study to understand some of the background technical information it was well worth the effort. This is an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to understand and learn more about the many conditions that can cause vertigo, as well as covering different diagnostic techniques and rehabilitative exercises. I am happy to report that I have now fully recovered from any impairment from my case of "vestibular neuritis", and am much better prepared to address any other incidence of vertigo that may occur for both myself and my family. Highly recommended.

This is the "bible" of vestibular dysfunction and treatment. As a PT who works with patients with vestibular dysfunction I have found this book invaluable. A must have for any PT working with patients with vestibular disorders.
