Flawed but sufficient

I read through this entire book in preparation for the chemistry SAT II. The book was relatively easy to read and understand. Yet, I do remember finding numerous mistakes in the answer key. Besides that, it did it's job - on the SAT II, I finished with 20 minutes left to check answers.. and got an 800.

Get it early and use it as a supplement

This book is fine as a supplement, but by itself is impossible to understand. It was so frustrating to read because it didn't explain things well at all, and there were a lot of distracting typos and inconsistencies. I'm a good student and a great test taker (I got a 770 on the math level I test, an 800 on math level II, and a 750 on the US history), but I got a 480 on this one. I'm pretty disappointed.

Very in-depth and covered everything you need to know about the SAT II chemistry. If you are not in AP Chemistry when you are taking the SAT II chemistry, then this book is a must because it is by far the most in-depth. Generally speaking, Barron's is the best for self-study because it is so in-depth.

About the Author
Stuart L. Hart is one of the world's top authorities on the implications of environment and poverty for business strategy. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, he is one of the founding fathers of the base of the pyramid economic theory. He also serves as Distinguished Fellow at the William Davidson Institute (University of Michigan), Founder and President of Enterprise for a Sustainable World, and Founding Director of the Emergent Institute in Bangalore, India.

Fernando Casado Caneque is the Associate Director of the Enterprise for a Sutainable World's BoP Global Network. A Ph.D. economist and journalist specializing in projects related to economic and sustainable development, he has worked as strategic advisor to a variety of international organizations (such as UNDP, UNIDO, UNDSD, UNEP, OECD, IADB and the World Bank) and has been the general coordinator of UNDPs Millennium Development Goals initiative in Spain. He has also worked as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in New York.

Rape, Plunder, and Sordid Hi-jinks

"The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony," is a marvelous retelling of the Greek myths that puts a trace on their source, and a track on their permutations. More importantly Roberto Calasso explores their ramifications on modern times. And, he does it in a scholarly and entertaining way that never pulls us from the full world of ancient Greece that he recreates. Oh, those gods and goddesses were steeped in gore, and would wreck whatever havoc was necessary to have their ways with humanity and each other. The blood of every hero seems to begin with a sanctified seduction or rape, and end in a pool either before the gates of Troy, or as a result of that ten year war. Not to say that the humans act or fare any better than their divine counterparts. The greatest among them were small in their motives as they pursued homicide, parricide, matricide, infanticide and every other side of slaughter they could summon into being. But, as small as they were, they were heroes; and, as petty as they were, they were the gods; and their actions, reactions, and inactions shaped and continue to shape Western culture. "The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony" is a fitting companion piece to "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," and stands alone as a thrilling tale of the mortal and immortal excesses that have formed us.

A life-changing work of genius

Roberto Calasso's retelling of the myths of antiquity is as
powerful and life-changing a book as I've ever read. He
illuminates these stories and brings them to life, showing us
the power they held for the ancients by infusing them with
his own narrative power, writing in a style which is crisp,
modern, and yet full of fantasy. We see our own lives in the
lives of the gods and the lives of the humans with whom
they spoke, made love, made war.

This book would be worth reading simply for the engaging way
in which Calasso tells the stories. He doesn't stop there,
however. His insights and interpretations are worth a book in
themselves. Nearly every page of my copy is filled with
checks and underlined passages, each representing ideas which
provoked thought or simply struck me as brilliant. This book
is not another dictionary of myths in the style of Bullfinch
and Hamilton and Graves--it is a work of literature in its own
right, and, I believe, a work of genius.

If you are interested in classical mythology, read this book.
If you are not, read this book. It is for anyone who wants
to see the world in a different, richer way.

Just like the title---scraps----but these are the leftover drawings of Sailor Jerry, and totally needed to any completest--like me...Sailor Jerry, the right wing genius who mentored Ed Hardy and Mike Malone, and before them, did his bit to bring tattooing out of the gutter and into the modern age......I get great joy tripping on everything he ever did--to quote Louis Armstrong." if you gotta ask, you never gonna know...".

Grade 2-4-- Van Allsburg's latest offering may be seen as preachy or provocative, allegorical or obvious, but like much of his previous work, it is bound to attract attention and stimulate discussion. Written in the form of a ship's log, the book outlines the unusual events that take place aboard the Rita Anne after the discovery of a glowing stone on a mysterious, deserted island. In a few brief entries, Captain Randall Ethan Hope notes his initial pleasure in the cultured and convivial crew, details the finding of the luminous stone, and divulges its terrible transformative effect--his shipmates have been turned into primates. When a sudden storm blows up, the Captain expects the worst. However, the ship survives long enough for the men to be rehabilitated and subsequently rescued. The stone is sent to the bottom of the sea by Captain Hope and all on board swear themselves to secrecy. The dramatic illustrations increase the suspense and surprise inherent in the unlikely adventures described. Visual humor, although used sparingly, also adds to the appeal of the colorful paintings. While this picture book could be read merely as an exotic ocean adventure, literacy advocates and fans of book discussions will enjoy ruminating over the symbolism of the mysterious glowing stone and arguing over the interpretation of Van Allsburg's oblique message. --Lisa Dennis, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

The two-time Caldecott winner continues the didactic vein of Just a Dream (1990). Captain Hope records the eerie events during a voyage of the Rita Anne. His crew is hard-working and ``accomplished in other ways''--they enjoy reading, music, and storytelling. Even so, after they stop on an island and bring back a mysterious rock with one smooth face that gives off a ``peculiar light,'' the men do nothing but watch it. Mesmerized, they sit transfixed until they are transformed into apes who don't even help when the ship is disabled in a storm. So, fortunately, is the stone, and Hope finds that the men are gradually returned to themselves as he reads to them. The artist's elegantly structured, richly shadowed paintings suggest more enigmatic depth than the story delivers, while the starkly boxed text interrupts the visual flow of each spread. The Wretched Stone is the second book I have read in the Van Allsburg line of books. The glowing stone that fascinated the sailors could have been compared to television "in the old days." Nowadays, it could be compared to smart phones or one of the many other pieces of technology that we have in abundance. That glowing stone could be taking us all over if we aren't careful. A wonderfully well written book that really makes you think. Also, maybe a bit intense for younger children.

Great ammunition against TV!

If you have trouble getting your kids to turn off the tv...here is a wonderful adventure book to show the kids how too much television viewing can turn you into an "ape"! Filled with metaphors for older children (8 and up) to figure out: Could the strange island where they found the wretched stone once have been inhabited with intelligent life? Perhaps all that is left (after pollution, technology) is unedible vegetation, undrinkable water, stinky odors--but the "stone" remains,("rough textured, gray with portion that is flat and smooth as glass,"), sound like a tv? How about the lightning that knocks out the "power" of the stone/tv? And I love the part where..."It seems that those who knew how to READ recovered more quickly."

Another recommended "anti-tv" book for kids: "Fred's TV" by, Clive Dobson.(may be out of print, but can still get in online!)

About the Author

She has lived in Taiwan, Spain, and Mexico and is an internationally known expert on second language learners. Her research and publications focus on effective instruction for English learners, including those with learning disabilities. She has presented her research across the U.S. and internationally including Oxford University (England), Wits University (South Africa), Harvard University (U.S.), South East Europe University (Macedonia), and University of Barcelona (Spain). Publications include the popular SIOP book series and over 50 books, book chapters and journal articles.

 

Anne W. Graves, Ph.D., is a Professor at San Diego State University (SDSU) teaching and conducting research on instruction in reading and writing for learners with disabilities from diverse backgrounds since 1990. Beginning in 1975, Graves taught in special education settings in the public schools for 6 years. After receiving her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 1984, she was a Professor at University of South Carolina---Coastal Campus and Sacramento State University before coming to SDSU. Her research on efficient and effective instructional approaches and interventions has resulted in numerous publications and presentations at local, state, and international conferences. Graves is part of a research team at San Diego State that conducts studies of intensive small group instruction for struggling readers in culturally and linguistically diverse settings. Currently, she is principal investigator on a grant that supports cultural and linguistic emphasis in teacher preparation for candidates seeking credentials in both special education and bilingual elementary or secondary known as ADELANTE funded by Office of English Language Acquisition in the U. S. Department of Education.

Comprehensible meaning for teachers

This book is an excellent tool for teachers seeking to improve their instructional practices. It is also a very useful tool for teacher trainers who wish to help educators in the process of reaching English Language learners (ELLs). It explains how effective teachers can reach ELLs. Although short, every page is worth reading.

Wow! Lots of info. in this book

There is a lot of info. in this book. I took the CLAD exam 7 years ago and remember a lot of the same content. This book goes a step farther than theory and has real-life senerios with a focus on different cultures/children learning English. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about teaching English Language Learners.

Where are the links for videos?

The content is great, and the organization of the book is good. However, I am not happy that the video links don't work, nor is there a website address to view them. This appears to be essential content that is not available to Kindle for PC readers.
