Great text for high school or college

I had used this text in a geometry class I took in college as a math major (class was not required, just needed hours to fill). After using this book and finishing the course, I found it to be much better than the geometry book I used in high school.
This book, like many high school texts, breaks geometry down into constructions using only a straight-edge and compass and then introduces definitions and theorems (some proved, some left to prove as exercises). The part that hooked me in was the fill-in-the-blank-step proofs that were partially completed but let the reader finish so that he or she will become familiar with "Statement/Reason" geometric proofs.
Finally, after ten chapters which deal with such topics as quadrilaterals, parallel lines, polygon areas, similar and congruent triangles, and circles, the authors introduce logic by methods of truth tables, Euler circles, and tautologies.
Last but not least, a chapter connecting algebra to 2-Dimensional (Cartesian) geometry offer the bridge between the "abstract" world of algebra and the "concrete" world of geometry.

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) was an English philosopher, best known for his work in political philosophy. This 1651 book Leviathan established what became known as "social contract theory." He wrote in the book's Dedication, "the endeavour to advance the civil power should not be by the civil power condemned; nor private men, by reprehending it, declare that they think that power too great. Besides, I speak not of the men, but... of the seat of power... That which perhaps may most ordinarily offend are certain texts of Holy Scripture, alleged by me to other purpose than ordinarily they used to be by others. But I have done it with due submission, and ... necessarily; for they are the outworks of the enemy, from whence they impugn the civil power."

He observes, "whereas in the planting of Christian religion ... the number of Christians increased wonderfully every day and in every place by the preaching of the Apostles and Evangelists, a great part of that success may reasonably be attributed to the contempt into which the priests of the Gentiles of that time had brought themselves by their uncleanness, avarice, and juggling between princes. Also the religion of the Church of Rome was partly for the same reason abolished in England and many other parts of Christendom, insomuch as the failing of virtue in the pastors maketh faith fail in the people... I may attribute all the changes of religion in the world to one and the same cause, and that is unpleasant priests; and those not only amongst catholics, but even in that Church that hath presumed most of reformation." (Ch. XII)

The book's most famous quotation [often cited without the preceding context] is: "Whatsoever therefore is consequent to a time of war, where every man is enemy to every man, the same is consequent to the time wherein men live without other security than what their own strength and their own invention shall furnish them withal. In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation; nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea; no commodious building; no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time; no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." (Ch. XIII)

He argues, "there be something else required, besides covenant, to make [men's] agreement constant and lasting; which is a common power to keep them in awe and to direct their actions to the one common benefit. The only way to erect such a common power, as may be able to defend them from the invasion of foreigners... is to confer all their power and strength upon one man, or upon one assembly of men, that may reduce all their wills... unto one will... This is more than consent, or concord; it is a real unity of them... made by covenant of every man with every man... as if every man should say... I authorize and give up my right of governing myself to this man, or to this assembly of men, on this condition; that thou give up thy right to him, and authorize all his actions in like manner. This done, the multitude so united in one person is called a Commonwealth... This is the generation of that great LEVIATHAN, or rather... of that mortal god to which we owe, under the immortal God, our peace and defense... one person, of whose acts a great multitude, by mutual covenant one with another, have made themselves every one the author, to the end he may use the strength and means of all as he shall think expedient for their peace and common defense." (Ch. XVII)

He suggests, "So it appeareth plainly... both from reason and Scripture, that the sovereign power... is as great as possibly men can be imagined to make it. And though of so unlimited a power, men may fancy many evil consequences , yet the consequences of the want of it, which is perpetual war of every man against his neighbor, are much worse. The condition of man in this life shall never be without inconveniences; but there happeneth in no Commonwealth any great inconvenience but what proceeds from the subjects' disobedience and breach of those covenants from which the Commonwealth has its being." (Ch. XX, pg. 112) He adds, "I have set forth the nature of man, whose pride and other passions have compelled him to submit himself to government; together with the great power of his governor, whom I compared to LEVIATHAN, taking that comparison out of the last two verses of ... Job [Ch. 41]." (Ch. XXVIII)

He states, "If a man therefore should ask a pastor, in the execution of his office... `By what authority doest thou these things...' he can make no other just answer but that he doth it by the authority of the Commonwealth, given him by the king or assembly that representeth it... But the king, and every other sovereign, executeth his office of supreme pastor by immediate authority from God, that is to say, in God's right... And therefore none but kings can put into their titles, a mark of their submission to God only, Dei Gratia Rex, etc." (Ch. XLII)

He actually founds the doctrine of Biblical Criticism, with comments such as these: "for the Pentateuch... We read in the last chapter of Deuteronomy concerning the sepulchre of Moses, `that no man knoweth of his sepulchre to this day,' that is, to the day wherein these words were written. It is therefore manifest that these words were written after his internment. For it were a strange interpretation to say Moses spake of his own sepulchre ... that it was not found to that day wherein he was yet living... the five Books of Moses were written after his time, though how long after it be not so manifest... That the Book of Joshua was also written long after the time of Joshua may be gathered out of many places in the book itself.... From the trouble that Achan raised in the camp, the writer saith, `remaineth unto this day'; which must needs therefore be long after the time of Joshua." (Ch. XXXIII)

He rejects the doctrines of Hell and Purgatory: "We are therefor to consider what the meaning is of `everlasting fire,' and other the like phrases of Scripture... as the elect after the resurrection shall be restored to the estate wherein Adam was before he had sinned; so the reprobate shall be in the estate that Adam and his posterity were in after the sin committed... the texts that mention `eternal fire,' `eternal torments,' or `the worm that never dieth,'contradict not the doctrine of a second and everlasting death, in the proper and literal sense of the world death. The fire or torments prepared for the wicked in Gehenna... may continue forever... and there may never want wicked men to be tormented in them, though not every nor any one eternally. For the wicked... may at the resurrection live as they did... and consequently may engender perpetually, after the resurrection, as they did before: For there is no place of Scripture to the contrary... I see evident Scripture to persuade me that there is neither the word nor the thing of purgatory..." (Ch. XLIV)

Hobbes' book is one of most historically important works of political philosophy. While libertarians and anarchists may despise it, its arguments are still well worth reading today, but the modern student of philosophy.

Turner's (arts and humanities, New York Univ.) introduction to early Renaissance Florence neatly articulates the economic, political, and religious milieu of the city's artistic efflorescence. Within that context, he artfully limns an image of the expanding urban fabric of the 14th and 15th centuries. Besides evoking the problems of artistic function, patronage, and the training and professional life of the artist, the author articulates the intricate stylistic byways that mark the onset of the new Renaissance approach in sculpture, architecture, and painting, including a survey of the interior decoration of monasteries and homes and a contextual overview of some of the key monuments of the later 15th century. While unsurprising in its approach and conclusions, this carefully etched work is more than adequate as a primer to the study of the early Renaissance in Florence. Welch (Art and Authority in Renaissance Milan, Yale Univ., 1995) casts his investigative net over all Italy. Giving particular emphasis to the social ambiance in which art is produced and consumed, his discussion is marked by its scholarly breadth, clarity of argument, and willingness to include objects not within the canonic corpus. Readers should derive a deeper appreciation of the way contemporaries may have experienced works of art and the historical, religious, and intellectual environment from which they emerged. Along with keen analyses of the materials and the making of objects, workshop practices, and the relationship of artists and patrons, the context and function of sacred, public, and domestic works are vividly delineated here. Explaining Florence

As an art lover and architect, who has been reading extensivelly about Italy and spent three weeks exploring the city, I define this book as comprehensive, delicious to read and excellent in contents. Turner explains how the city has achieved such a moment in human civilization, not only by its art, but by its economics, technology, geography, historic context, social behavior. This book is one to fall in love with, and I would put it as a must read together with Kenneth Clark's Civilization.

Beautiful book!

The book is very well done. The photographs are of high quality; the coverage complete. I purchased the volume as background information for an art history survey course I'm enrolled in (I already hold a post-grad degree), and found it to be an excellent supplement to the cursory review my textbook offered.

As a consequence, it significantly reduces (or even eliminates) the involvement of a knowledge engineer in the process of building an intelligent agent.

Love the writing!

Love the characters! Love the stories! This is the first stories I've read that the characters are about more then 1 or 2 couples. It starts out with 1,2 or 3 but blend into more couples that end in one big happy family! Worth the read! Must read the phoenix club then this!

Excellent follow up to the Phoenix Club series. CJ Bishop never disappoints her stories take you into a world where you never want the stories to end. Your emotions are put to the test. On 9 June 2003, a 43-year-old coloured man named Magadien Wentzel walked out of Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town. Behind him lay a lifelong career in the 28s, South Africa's oldest and most reviled prison gang, for decades rumoured to have specialised in rape and robbery. In front of him lay the prospect of a law-abiding future, and life in a household of eight adults and six children, none of whom earned a living. Jonny Steinberg met Wentzel in prison in the dying months of 2002. By the time Wentzel was released, he and Steinberg had spent more than 50 hours discussing his life experiences. The Number is an account of their conversations and of Steinberg's journeys to the places and people of Wentzel's past. Wentzel had lived a bewilderingly schizophrenic life, wandering to and fro between three worlds: the arcane universe of prison gangs, steeped in a mythology of banditry and retribution, where he was known as JR; the fringes of South Africa's criminal economy, where he lived by a string of stolen names and learned the arts of commercial fraud; and his scattered family which eked out a living int the coloured ghettos of the Cape flats. The Number visits each of those worlds in turn. It is a tale of modern South Africa's historic events seen through the eyes of the country's underclass. Surprisingly, perhaps, it is neither a story of passivity nor despair, but of beguiling ingenuity and cool cynicism. Most of all, the book is an account of memory and identity, of Wentzel's project to make some sense of his bewildering past and something worthy of his future. When Steinberg met him, Wentzel was embarking on a quest to retrieve the name he had been given at birth. He was also beginning the daunting task of gathering together the estranged children he had sired into a nuclear family. It was an eccentric and painful venture for a man with his past, but it has led him to construct an account of himself that begs to be told.

Another Jonny Steinberg Gem

Like all Jonny Steinberg books, this one's essential reading for anyone interested in South Africa. The difference with "The Number" is that it's an in-depth examination of the prison gangs and the mythology surrounding their beginnings. The book follows Magadien Wentzel, a member of the feared 28s who is eventually released but struggles to place himself in the world outside. He tries hard to go straight and to avoid gang activity. He believes the children he's fathered will be delighted to see him. He has detailed plans for a future for himself and them. But in the real world, that doesn't happen. Their perspective of him is radically different. The book also centers on Wentzel's search for his true identity and numerous attempts to make sense of his past. He is determined to have a hopeful future, even if it doesn't seem likely. Jonny Steinberg is sympathetic, cynical, but, above all else, relentlessly honest in telling Magadien Wentzel's convoluted but compelling story.

This is the story of Magadien Wentzel, a 43-year-old that got out of Pllsmoor Prison in Cape Town in 2003. He had been a member of one of South Africa's oldest and most reviled prison gangs. The author met him in 2002, andhad spent more than 50 hours interviewing him before his left prison.

In front of him lay the prospect of a law-abiding future, trying to make some sense of his bewildering past andsomething worthy of his future. He was beginning the daunting task of gathering together the estranged children he had sired into a nuclear family.

It's Got My Number

A sad, complex, enlightening account of one mans spiral into criminality and his desperate attempts in later life to escape his legacy. The history of the Numbers gang and it's mesh within both the prisons and gangs of the Western Cape I found very informative. Great story with a lot of interesting fact. Recommend.

Don't Waste Your Time w/this Book - Nothing Like The Exam!! 2 Stars

Just brush up on your knowledge of calculating percentages with your calculator (converting to & from decimals), Averages, chart reading (for DUI & Large Vessel Registration Fee Charts & things), Show up to your DMV Exam with a good calculator & the knowledge of how to use it, sit in the front if possible so that you won't be distracted (which means arriving early as state exams are first come, first served line-ups), bring a case of well-sharpened pencils (if your proctor sends you word in advance that you will need them), structure your time well, answering easy sections first, & returning to harder ones later, Be sure you go well-fed & with drinking water, & after a restroom break, so you do not have to leave the room for any reason. Think each question through, and in most cases 2 answers seem to be potentially correct, and it will be up to you to discern the most logical response. In the end, to place in the state exam rankings, you will find that in many cases, there usually was only one best answer anyway, and you just had to read the wording carefully in order to find it. Good luck... By the way, I took the exam after buying this book though the questions were completely different, and I did place in the California State rankings for the D.M.V, but due to the Governor's State budget cuts, he imposed a hiring freeze which barred all applicants from obtaining employment opportunities! Anyhow, good luck to you, and remember: common sense, basic reading ability, & a good calculator will get you through just fine!

Nothing like the exam

I would give a "no-star" rating if it was possible. Nothing like the exam.
There are so many misprints in this book that I really believe no one proofed it before sending it to press. They will give you a problem and then none of the four answers will even be a correct choice! This happened numerous times. This is very frustrating for a person who is trying to remember old math skills and wasted much of my study time.
