Wowza!

What a terrific tale! Set in the Seattle area around the life of Jason Wade, a reporter for the Seattle Mirror. This story unfolds around first the murder of a teenage prostitute followed a few months later by the murder of a beloved nun who has served the homeless, downtrodden & prison inmates for years. The complexities of this novel are so intricate and well written I couldn't put it down once I started. The murderer touched so many lives directly
and indirectly starting with a bank robbery gone bad 25 years ago where an 8 year old boy was held hostage and then killed in the crossfire. The arresting officers were Jasons' dad and his partner. The bank robber did 25yrs in the state pen and upon release all hell starts to break lose involving the hooker, the nun, Jasons dad, a young boy facing surgery for a brain tumor and his mom, folks in the soup kitchen where the nun worked not to mention the Seattle homicide division headed by lead detective Grace Garner, who just happens to be an ex- girlfriend of our reporter Jason who has been assigned to cover the whole story! Needless to say what follows is a wild rollercoaster ride of suspense and intrigue that had me breathless and on the edge of my seat the entire time it took me to read this marvelous creation from start to finish! Rick Mofina, you are one hell of a good writer! I will be gobbling up more of your books in my immediate future. To any readers out there who enjoy a good crime thriller tou can't go wrong with a Rick Mofina book! #1 R.F. fan, Merrilyn McGloin!

Who would kill a saint?

I really enjoyed this book and loved the Bible references as they were so apt in the case of Anne Brexton, the nun!! Who could possibly have killed such a wonderful and dedicated person? Well, I had to read to find out what happened. Great way to start the book – absolutely titillated my curiosity! Had to be more to the story than happenstance! Did enjoy the characters of Jason Wade and his father. I could actually visualize Jason Wade as Rick Mofina back in the days when he was working as a crime reporter– strange huh! (Smile) One thing that did bother me – really bothered me – and maybe I would have been the killer – had it been ME that was working as a journalist.... Are editors really like that??? Grrrr - would make me crazy! Oh well, on with the story... having been in the convent myself, I learned that there are all types of women that turn to God and none of them are saints, nor do they turn into saints. We all strive to do our best no matter what careers we choose. Anne Brexton was striving to atone for her past life. Sometimes, our past lives catch up to us instead of staying behind as we hope. But we are all human and we all have human failings unfortunately. I felt bad that she worked so hard to atone but still paid the penalty. A Perfect Grave was a perfect title for this book. Loved the way the sub plots all came together or should I say, twisted together – neat!! A great read!!!

Pretty darn good... (this review contains vague spoilers)

I received this book for free through a discount sent to me by Bookbub.
This was a very good book. The characters were clear and believable, though I would have liked to see Henry Wade fleshed out a little more. Had his character and situation been more fully developed, this book would have garnered 5 stars from me. I actually rate it about 4.5. The crime was complex and layered, revealed in stages, but I was not ever confused or bored with it. I found the character of the Nun very complicated yet sympathetic. The author clearly hints from the very beginning that the Sister is not who she seems or claims to be.
I am not an expert on crime thrillers, as epic fantasy is my usual genre, but I personally enjoyed this book, and I recommend it.

Symbolism in Need of an Image

The book is 60% poetry and 40% notes by Yeats, so it is a mix of verse and prose. It may be better to start with the notes as Yeats explains the Irish mythology he draws on and the symbols he uses. In the poetry Yeats repeats certain images too much, so that it seems repetitive. These images, already established as symbols, (e.g. the rose, dreams, sleep, the wind, hair), become rather ineffective as they immediately prompt symbolic or abstract thought. I no sooner read the image then question what it means. Poetry engages the reader first by its literal meaning, there is vitality in original imagery, which is lacking here. The one poem in this collection that does engage is "Aedh Tells of the Rose in His Heart," which I would rank as the best poem in the book. I also found "Valley of the Black Pig" interesting as Yeats writes of the mythological more than folklore, which is the subject and style of the other poems.

Sorry, But The Answer Is Not Blowing In The Wind Here

Many modern readers have approached Yeats backwards. They start with his later poems and work their way backward and I assume find that it becomes more intellectually or culturally challenging as the read his earliest works. In this collection, Yeats demands that the reader acquaints himself with Celtic lore and symbolism and if the reader does not, than this collection will be an infuriating experience.

For the modern young reader who may be fascinated by mysticism, magical realism, cultures outside the classical European experience, he may find that acquainting himself with Celtic history before he reads the collection will be most a rewarding manner to approach this collection.

Remember there were several decades between this collection and "Sailing To Byzantium."

Relying on documented fact and personal narratives whenever possible, the authors use clear but dramatic prose to describe such courageous and inspirational events as Deborah Sampson's masquerade as a soldier during the Revolutionary War, the flight of the Nez Perce, the revolt on the Amistad, César Chávez's pilgrimage to Sacramento to start the first farm workers' union, and the resettlement of the "lost boys" of the Sudan. Each event receives two pages and is accompanied by small but attractive and carefully detailed color illustrations that accurately depict both the action and the environment in which it occurred. The information is organized in such a way as to be useful for reports, but the volume will attract browsers as well. *Starred Review* Like Thomas Fleming's Everybody's Revolution (2006),although broader in scope, this lively history focuses on 20 individuals' quest for freedom across U.S. history. Some, like Roger Williams and Cesar Chavez, will be familiar, but most will not. The stories, both varied and fascinating, often go beyond the personal: the Acadians' exile from Nova Scotia, the purchase of freedom for an enslaved family, and the Mormons' trek to Utah are just some of the accounts told by eyewitnesses. Running along the bottom of each double-page spread is a pictorial map keyed to the text. The final account, dated 1988, deals with the journey of one of the lost boys of the Sudan, who is currently attending college. The authors make excellent use of primary sources and clearly indicate both actual quotes and those inferred from the record. Appended notes give more detail. As powerful as it is useful. An Inside Look Into How Conceited James Franco Really Is!

There's a picture of James Franco with a flaccid rubber penis stuck to his face. No, really... there is. And in case you miss it the first time, it's shown over and over again, in different settings... like he legitimately adhered the meat knuckle to his face and wore it around all day. How ironic. It's referenced throughout the book as "dicknose." I'm convinced that the sole purpose of this book is that damn penis picture... the other 200-some pages are just filler.

Honestly, here's what I think happened: someone (not Franco) bought a cheap camera (to achieve that "faux vintage" feel), and proceeded to stop by each and every household featured on the TLC "Hoarders" show. This rogue artist then photographed the junk piles and picked the lousiest shots -- haphazard clusters of children's toys, dirty bed sheets, and paint-stained school chairs -- and uploaded them to Adobe Illustrator. Then someone -- still not James Franco -- went all crazy marking them up with random words and phrases like "Gucci" or "Eff You." Finally, James Franco attended a gallery opening somewhere and got his name attached to the "project" (is this a "project?") and donated pictures of his penis nose and... well, then this book -- I'm sorry, I mean "boomerang" -- came about. Oh... and something about William Faulkner in Paris. Yeah...

I was impressed with the quality of the book. The content...eh..The pictures have a Instagram feel to them. and most of the text is scribbled on by no other than James Franco!.. If you're looking to actually read about the exhibit...don't bother if you're looking to own a bit of art by James Franco then by all means get it. Fair warning it's most definitely a "rated R" book and not for the younger fans.

Why did I even take a look at this? Well, it wasn't my copy, and I admit that the novelty that is James Franco did cause me to give him another chance after Palo Alto. I liked him as an actor...I genuinely had respect for him after seeing him in "Freaks and Geeks," but his forays into publishing coupled with very poor reaction to course failure have destroyed my positive perception of him. I know that bringing up the outside factors are not necessarily appropriate in terms of a book review, but with Franco...it does seem to be what he is about...he has created a Franco brand, and this book unfortunately seems to be the latest installation in that line of products, a line of products that is growing increasingly disappointing. My advice...wait for a used copy.

About the Author
Andrew Louth, born in Lincolnshire and brought up in the north of England, studied Theology at the universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh. From 1970 to 1985 he was Fellow and Chaplain of Worcester College, Oxford, and University Lecturer in Theology, teaching prinipally Patristics. In 1985 he became Reader in History at Goldsmith's College, London. He is the author of The Origins of the Christian Mystical Tradition (1981), Discerning the Mystery: An Essay on the Nature of Theology (1983) and Denys the Areopagite (1989). He has also edited Early Christian Writings for the Penguin Classics.

Early Christian Writings

Staniforth's is a superb translation of the Apostolic Fathers, the best I have ever come across. It is very readable. Each writing comes with an introdution by the editor detailing its history --- when and where it was written, etc. --- and discussing its main themes. This would make a excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in early Christianity.
The texts included in this volume are 1 Clement; the 7 epistles of Ignatius to the Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans, and Polycarp; the epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians; the Martyrdom of Polycarp; the Epistle to Diognetus; the Epistle of Barnabas (despite what one of the previous reviewers says, it's included in this volume); and the Didache.
Conspicuously absent are the Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias. Both have usually been considered Apostolic Fathers, and I am a little baffled at their omission.
Other recommended Penguin Classics: "The Jewish War" by Josephus, "The History of the Church" by Eusebius.

A Valuable Link to the Post-Apostolic Church Fathers

Early Christian Writings is an excellent collection of the works of the Post-Apostolic Church Fathers. It is for anyone looking for literature that opens a window into the Post-Apostolic Early Church. The epistles included are The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians; The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans, and to Polycarp; The Epistles of Polycarp to the Philippians; along with the Epistles to Diognetus and Barnabas. The book also includes the Didache and the martyrdom of Polycarp. For some reason Louth did not include the Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias, though he does mention them as being part of Cotelier's collection of writings by the Church Fathers.
If you are interested in the writings of the Church Fathers, and have never read such a collection, you can have some enjoyable and moving reading ahead of you. In reference to his pending martyrdom Ignatius writes, "I am His (God's) wheat, ground fine by the lions' teeth to be made purest bread for Christ" (Romans 4). He also says, "To die in Jesus Christ is better than to be monarch of earth's widest bounds. He who dies for us is all I seek; He who rose again for us is my whole desire" (Romans 6). The Epistle to Diognetus contains a vivid and compelling description of the early Christians. The second half of the Didache is full of interesting guidelines and instructions to the early believers on such things as baptism and fasting. Louth includes some good commentary about the fascinating account of the martyrdom of Polycarp.
The translation by Staniforth is very readable. The introductions by Louth are interesting, helpful, and well written. The notes following each book provide the author's commentary of the passage, assistance on difficult passages, insight into the mindset of the writer, important historical information, and other resources for further study. These early church writings are available on the Internet but I have not found any Internet sources that provide as good a presentation of the writings as Early Christian Writings. The inclusion of The Shepherd of Hermas and the fragments of Papias would have made it a more comprehensive collection. Despite this exclusion, for those looking for such a collection, I recommend Early Christian Writings.

Good for laypersons

This collection is a decent collection and translation of the Apostolic Fathers for the general reader. I have two gripes though.

One is that the Shepherd of Hermas is not included. I would imagine this was because of its length, but the collection seems woefully inadequate without it.

The second is that the verse and chapter numbers are not given in a form that makes them the least bit usable when looking up passages that are referenced in other books.

For research purposes, I would recommend the Loeb Classical Library editions or the excellent one volume reworking of the Lightfoot edition available from Baker Books edited by Michael Holmes.

But if you're not out to be the next Jarislav Pelikan or J.N.D. Kelley, then this should do just fine for some interesting and inspiring reading.
