Lively & useful guide for Tolkien fans

There are any number of Tolkien "encyclopedias," but I believe this is the best. Well-written with ample details drawn from the best of the available Tolkien materials, including the posthumously published "Peoples of Middle-Earth" & "Unfinished Tales," among others. Illustrations include the lines of descent for the Eldar & the Edain, maps of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, & a diagram of the "Spoken Tongues" showing the descent of the various languages of Middle-Earth from the original Quenya (equivalent to our Indo-European). Tyler assumes that his readers are generally familiar with Tolkien's best-known works ("The Hobbit," LOTR, & "The Silmarillion"), so he mostly summarizes the events from those books, while offering more detailed information about characters such as the "weedy & ineffectual" Lotho Sackville-Baggins (son of Otho & Lobelia) & peoples such as Gondor's historic enemies the Haradrim (who are mentioned only in passing in LOTR, but get two full pages in Tyler's book). All of the Feanorian Tengwa characters/letters are included, along with their sound values & the words they also represent, should you decide to learn the Quenya tongue. Comprehensive & entertaining.

Extremely Helpful Guide

Wow, I am so glad that J.E.A. Tyler put together, because the information helped me to get a better grip of who, what, and why. There is so much depth to the Lord of the Rings that is difficult keep to keep track of the story, the languages used and the pronuciations of the names can be daunting to the most avid of fans. However this book helps tremendously. This book added to the my enjoyment of the grandure of the story.

You can never learn too much about Middle Earth

This is a good source of information about Tolkien's writings. It sometimes reads like a novel. The author assumes you are as knowledgable as he is about the Tolkien world so not all the information you want is there. I find Foster's Guide to Middle Earth much better. The Companion is a good additional source of information along with The Atlas of Middle Earth

This book is seriously needed by the Construction Bar! The authors, father and daughter team Roger and Camilla ter Haar, have produced an essential statement of practice for both the academic and the practical elements of what we need to tell the clients in a construction case- what can I get? This is especially relevant where we are negotiating a settlement which can crop up quite frequently in this specialist area of law, often when the case is part heard because of the way the evidence has gone. The case law citations, the detailed index and the academic comment are great bonuses for this essential reference book for chambers.

The book starts well with a description of what we do at the Construction Bar- in general we cover building, engineering and technology projects with particular reference to standard forms of contract although most disputes arise out of or in respect of construction projects. The term is quite loose today as it covers a number of linked substantive law areas and the remedies available in them.

There are a number of books on the market covering the thorny issue of remedies for torts and breach of contract which are so intermingled in reality as to need the rigorous analysis demanded by the courts when remedies in these areas are sought.

That is where `ter Haar on Remedies' comes into its own. There are 25 chapters covering all the main areas: rectification, rescission, quantum meruit, termination, frustration, measure of damages, the `black hole' cases, loss of profits and overheads, `global' claims, costs and interest, set off, injunctions, specific performance, declarations, limitation and dispute resolution.

It is worth looking at the last chapter on ADR in particular because there are some very handy hints on how the courts may well be viewing the timetable of proceedings in the future. It may well be that when there is a new edition of this work (as they surely must be!) that chapter 25 will be expanded as ADR itself expands.

The authors have made out a great case for handling the issue of remedies with intelligent use of authorities although, as they say, it is not designed to cover or include a whole range of problems in commercial construction projects, but to give us an identification of the areas that are likely to be of interest when running a case- they do just that and `ter Haar' has an important place in the chambers library in both the contract and the tort sections.

This is not a complete book!

Books that don't finish the story, and leave you hanging should be clearly labelled.

So, know going in that you need to spend $8 to read the whole story. that in itself would not be a problem, as long as the description clearly states that. However, when I pay $8 for a book, I expect professional editing.

This story wasn't terrible, but it certainly ranked high on the NFW scale. It also does contain a fair number of typos and errors.

Paying $2 - 3 for the full story, (which of course includes 2 other "books"), would be more reasonable. As it is, I won't buy the next two, it just isn't written well enough to justify the cost.

Is it too much to ask for the whole story now??

Yet again, an author has decided to drag out her story (and increase her profits) by dividing an already "so so" tale into three books. Three books to tell us what one would have easily done. Having read the first "book" I will not purchase the others. The story was not compelling enough to make me spend $8, and I can already guess what happens by reading the synopsis of each of the other two books if I cared about that. I'm beginning to develop a real dislike for books that are needlessly divided up into several volumes. Rarely is there anything in the books to make this either plausible or preferable. And I REALLY hate it when book one is not clearly labeled as BOOK ONE, meaning I will have to buy others to get the whole story. Enough already writers and publishing companies. As for this story itself, the writing was only mediocre, the characters somewhat caricatures of their stereotypes, and certainly not worth investing the time (or money) it would require to finish the series. I gave it two stars because it wasn't horrible, it just wasn't really good. I'll forget it by next week.

Strange book, a scam.

I got this book because it was free and it had a good rating. I think the reviewers were swayed by the fact that it was free. Very poorly written, tons of sloppy editing that distracted you from the story. But the main complaint is that it's less than half a book, it leaves with no conclusion at all. Don 't reward the author and publisher by moving on to her other books in hopes of finding the story line somewhere else. This is a scam, plain and simple.

A bit thin...

This is a collection of academic articles describing various aspects of business intelligence. Allthough the articles are interesting in themselves, the title of the book hints at a more hands-on approach than actually found in the text. Also the Accounting and Finance perspective is marginally represented, with no more than parts of two chapters devoted to the subject. I would say that about 60% of the book is an introduction to the world of business intelligence giving a birds eye view of subjects like ETL, OLAP and datawarehousing. 30% of the book is about more or less related subjects like the business reporting xml schema. Finally about 10% of the book actually handles accounting and finance. I was a bit disappointed.

I have scoured the internet in search of a concise discussion of accounting data warehouses. This book finally provides some clear guidance. Chapters 3 and 4, in particular, provide the best explanation yet of how accounting data warehouse requirements are different from sales data warehouses. Bravo to this book.
