In the eighteenth century, New Spaniards (colonial Mexicans) so lauded their nuns that they developed a local tradition of visually opulent portraits, called monjas coronadas or “crowned nuns,” that picture their subjects in regal trappings at the moment of their religious profession and in death. This study identifies these portraits as markers of a vibrant and changing society that fused together indigenous and Euro-Christian traditions and ritual practices to construct a new and complex religious identity that was unique to New Spain.

To discover why crowned-nun portraits, and especially the profession portrait, were in such demand in New Spain, this book offers a pioneering interpretation of these works as significant visual contributions to a local counter-colonial discourse. James M. Córdova demonstrates that the portraits were a response to the Spanish crown’s project to modify and modernize colonial society—a series of reforms instituted by the Bourbon monarchs that threatened many nuns’ religious identities in New Spain. His analysis of the portraits’ rhetorical devices, which visually combined Euro-Christian and Mesoamerican notions of the sacred, shows how they promoted local religious and cultural values as well as client-patron relations, all of which were under scrutiny by the colonial Church. Combining visual evidence from images of the “crowned nun” with a discussion of the nuns’ actual roles in society, Córdova reveals that nuns found their greatest agency as Christ’s brides, a title through which they could, and did, challenge the Church’s authority when they found it intolerable.

About the Author

Samuel T. Gladding, Ph.D., is Chair of and a Professor in the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is a fellow in the American Counseling Association (ACA) and its former president (2004-2005). Additionally, Dr. Gladding has served as president of two ACA divisions (ACES and ASGW), president of Chi Sigma Iota (the international counseling honorary society), president of the American Association of State Counseling Boards, and chair of the ACA Foundation. A Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Gladding has taught counseling and worked with universities and counselors in Turkey, China, Estonia, Austria, Malaysia, Sweden, the Philippines, South Africa, Australia, Mexico, and Canada. He has authored numerous professional publications, including 40 books, four videos, and over six dozen (72) scholarly articles. Some of his most recent Pearson books include Counseling: A Comprehensive Profession (7th edition, 2013), Clinical Mental Health Counseling in Community and Agency Settings (4th edition with Deborah Newsome, 2014), Group Work: A Counseling Specialty (6th edition, 2011), The Counseling Dictionary (3rd edition, 2011), and this 6th edition of Family Therapy: History, Theory, and Practice. Dr. Gladding has been married to his wife, Claire, for 28 years. They are the parents of three grown children. Dr. Gladding received his degrees from Wake Forest, Yale, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He continues to work as a licensed professional counselor and serves on the North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors. UPDATE THIS BOOK

This book was published in 2015, but might as well have been written in 1950. If this is what family therapy is based on, then the author is clueless as to the multitude of family constellations that have no "theory" to work with. That is a shame, as how are therapists supposed to work with families that are not based on middle class nuclear family structures? Yes, there is mention of other structures, but the basis is still the nuclear family. Update this book please, and include feminist theory, intersectionality, queer theory...stop being so based on heteronormative, privileged perspectives on family.

NOT as good as GFF series but has a charm of its own

It is fantastic to have a new set of Monster High books to enjoy, and even though I like adventures of Venus, Roccel, and Robecca much more. This new "die-ary" is fun though extremely short. With excerpts from Draculara's dairy starting each chapter before going on to tell the next part of the story it is a lot like reading a mini diary that might come with the doll. Those mini stories have always been clever and fun and I can see why they would be used for a book series. My only complaint, like I mentioned before was, it is short. The story that I will give no spoilers on is quick and really only has two kind of twists that revival themselves at the end, but don't really a chance to build up. It is disappointing the story doesn't take advantage of the possibilities it sets up for itself.

In the Ghoulfriends series the story was more fun guessing what turn our three heroes would have to take next. They fleshed out three favorites that weren't the main characters you see in the movies and really had the feeling that the world of Monster High was bigger than just Draculaura, Frankie, and Clawdeen.

I'm really happy to get new adventures of the ghouls especially how little of new webisodes have been getting made. I just think of the book series thus far the Ghoulfriemds Forever is still the best, but like Draculaura you can still make the best of a not so great situation if you stay positive.

one thing i like about monster his is how it takes on different (and often difficult) subjects
bullying,prejudice,and even dealing with mixed backgrounds are just a few to name off the top of my head
here we deal with change and just how menacing it can be.and i think they did it well, i recommend this book for those going threw change's simile to draculara's

i mean it wss so bad after the few couple words you barfed but i really think they need to rewrite this add a few more details, u know mix it up.

Excellent and rare information

I have been involved in internal martial arts and spirituality for 50 years. I have noted over time how more and more information, previously hard to obtain, has been made available. This book continues the trend.
The specific strength of this book is a detailed, precise and accurate explanation of the process of focusing awareness on the acupuncture points and meridians of the body as a Qigong practice. This is rarely explained in enough detail to enable one to practice it without personal instruction or prior knowledge. This book does the trick.
Mitchell also presents information easily accessible elsewhere: the locations and functions of the various points and meridians. He does so (as far as I can judge) accurately and succinctly.
It appears to me that Mitchell is a well-qualified teacher who wants to communicate accurate and helpful information, and is able to do so with welcome clarity.

Easy to read, full of hard to find info and seems completely legit.

It's almost written as though you're talking to him, as opposed to reading a text book. He speaks from experience and it shows. No mindlessly repeating what others have said. I have read alot of books about chi and if I were going to pick two to recommend it would be this and Daoist Nei Gong, his previous book.

This book is a must read whether you are just an acupuncture student looking for some greater understanding or a Nei Gong practitioner seeking a deeper understanding of your practice. So far, this book offers a great deal of deep insights. It is simply a book worth adding to your library.

Goofy and glorious!

I started this novel on the sly. Your girl here was stuck at the DMV for over an hour and forgot to bring her paperback. I opened Girls Who Travel on my kindle app to kill some time because heaven forbid I have to have a conversation with another human. Welp,here we are. My paperback didn't even stand a chance against Nicole Trilivas' delicious debut novel. Allow me to tell you why.*FLOURISH MOTION*

Travel has been on my mind more and more lately (likely because my life has less direction than it ever has) (accidental pun maybe?) - it seems like the most rewarding way to get lost in order to find yourself. The further you get away from the life you know, the more you realize how much there still is to learn. The protagonist, Kika is a total travel maniac. She's hooked. All of her money goes straight to booking the next plane ticket so when eventually she has to come home for an extended stretch of time...cue boring desk job and general resentment towards her stiff professional attire and the knowledge that she's too broke to go anywhere. Soon though, through various causes and effects, she ends up in London, nannying for an incredibly wealthy family that adores her. It's here she learns what it's like to balance responsibility with her gypsy ways. Much more happens in between but for the sake of actually allowing you to experience the novel yourself, imma hush.

This book got to me, in the best kinda way, in the way only words can – it seeps into your blood, makes you want to dance a little longer, chop all your hair off, smile at the cute someone across the bar. Even just READING about travelling across the world made me feel like I was a step closer to being the brave earth goddess that I keep hoping I'm turning in to.

I'm going say this even though I know it will be taken offensively: Girls Who Travel felt like the 50 Shades of romcom, adventurous chick lit. NOW CALM DOWN. Trilivas is a far better writer, just in general in every sense all across the board etc., but the story is very simple, incredibly predictable and the dialogue can feel a little pedestrian at times. That is not to say the writing is bad, IT'S NOT. It's like an ice cream bubble gum cotton candy kind of novel - you love love love all that sugar but you know there really isn't much substance. But it is ALSO the kind of novel where you just want to read it forever so maybe your life will slowly morph into the action on the pages in front of you. You know that part in Mary Poppins where they all jump into the sidewalk chalk painting? YEA. I wanted Kika's story to keep going - I didn't want to go back to my paperback, let alone real life.

About the Author
Steve Fotheringham has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Weber State University, A Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from The University of Arizona. But the only credentials he claims for this book is that he was an eyewitness. With family and news videos, text messages, emails, Aaron's written stories, journal entries, magazine and news articles, and DVR recordings that cover much of his life, coupled with the fact that Steve and his wife Kaylene were there most of the time, he was able to write an accurate and inspiring biography.

Great Read, Don't miss it.

"So pleasantly surprised! It's been a while since I've read a book with so many levels of interest. I thought it was going to be about a young man dealing with a disability who had big dreams. That's just scratching the surface. This book chronicles the story of an incredible family that have witnessed their adopted son's development into an international WCMX star. Told by the father of the family, we get an inside look into the creation of a new family, the creation of a new sport and the creation of an attitude of living that could benefit us all. Easy to read and hard to put down.

Great Book - You Won't Be Disappointed!

When I picked up this book I knew I was going to learn about an amazing athlete based on the cover! A man in a wheelchair doing a handplant at the skate park…WHAT? And boy did I learn. I learned about perseverance, dedication, attitude, and a desire to do what every other kid Aaron was hanging out was doing. Wheelz has fans around the world which is not surprising at all because of his devotion to a sport that not only inspires others, but pushes everyone’s thinking about a person with disabilities so far out of the box. What I didn’t expect this book to be was a “How to” for parents. How to not hold your child back from the things they want to try, even if it is a bit scary. How to encourage, support and love no matter what! How to fight for what they need. Steve Fotheringham tells stories in a way that makes you smile, laugh, cheer and cry. Being able to watch the video clips that he was referring to because the links were provided in the book was a perfect addition. So well written!

Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition

As the father of WCMX (or wheelchair motocross, for the uninitiated), Aaron Fotheringham has done some amazing things. He's successfully landed multiple backflips in competition, served as a wheelchair stuntman in movies and TV shows, and toured the world with Nitro Circus and a host of charitable organizations. But it's his attitude that's truly remarkable. When a well-meaning preacher once assured him that he'd be able to walk after he was resurrected, Aaron's immediate response was, "What makes you think I'll want to?" Other kids had to leave their bikes outside as soon as they got to school, but he got to ride his bike everywhere he went.

WHEELZ affords its readers a behind-the-scenes look at Aaron's life and the rise of this bone-crushing sport. It's a one-of-a-kind book about a one-of-a-kind kid who never thought much of the fact that his legs didn't really work, and I highly recommend it.
