Drawing the human form is probably the hardest task for any artist. Sketching the body within the correct proportions is hard enough - trying to draw the awkward bits like hands, feet, hair can be a nightmare. In this book, Giovanni Civardi sets out to try and show just how to create sketches of the human form. As he points out these do not have to be accurate depictions of a person, just sketches and outlines of pertinent features, and facial expressions. Trying to get everything down on paper within just a few minutes is impossible - concentrating on what is essential is all important. He gives lots of useful advice, and explains why he chose to sketch the images portrayed in the book - what he was hoping to achieve, the artistic image and point he was trying to make. The images themselves offer a good starting point for artists to copy and learn to sketch for themselves. A good solid introduction to the subject which will be welcomed by artists of any standard.-Monstersandcritics.com Giovanni Civardi has been something of a fixture in the field of drawing people for some time and his books offer excellent instruction and a wealth of illustration. However, I've always felt that there was a certain heaviness to them and that they looked maybe a little dated. And now, suddenly, he seems to have developed a quite delightful lightness of touch and slight loosening that gives his figures life and movement. It's really quite something of a revelation. The main body of this relatively short book is taken up with pages of a wide variety of figures: young and old, static and moving, in a variety of costumes and poses. The instruction (though, in truth there are relatively few words) is confined to the introductory sections where Giovanni deals with a few basic drawing principles. This is a book that's probably best approached with at least a moderate ability to draw and the ability to interpret without being told what you're looking at. This is a collection of drawings from the author's sketchbook. Very, very little technique or instruction. Two pages out of 64 are text/instruction. The rest are his pictures. Here's the "instruction" for drawing heads: "When drawing just the head, move from the general elements to the specifics or, once you have worked out the overall space it will take up on the page, you could then move on to defining the dimensions and the form of an important detail (an eye, the nose, etc) Move from this to constructing the entire head and the relationships of each part to another, moving from the specifics to the general elements. The choice of which of these two approaches to adopt will depend on the artist's' attitude and preferences, but also on the position in which they find the subject they intend to sketch." In other words, you can draw the head, then add the eyes, or you can start with the nose then add the rest of the face, depending on your mood. Does that teach you to draw?

About the Author
Neil V. Watson and the members of his lab at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada study sex-related aspects of the structure and function of the nervous system, with ongoing grant support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. His work on topics ranging from the effects of steroids on cell survival, to the neural control of reproductive behavior, to human cognitive sex differences has appeared in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Brain Research. Dr. Watson received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at SFU in 1996 where he is now Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology. He teaches biological psychology to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students each year. S. Marc Breedlove, the Barnett Rosenberg Professor of Neuroscience at Michigan State University, has written over 130 scientific articles investigating the role of hormones in shaping the developing and adult nervous system, publishing in journals including Science, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He is also passionate about teaching-in the classroom, and in the greater community through interviews with the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Newsweek, as well as broadcast programs such as All Things Considered, Good Morning America, and Sixty Minutes. He has active grant support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Breedlove is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Psychological Science.

Pretty good

Very interesting textbook. Easy to read even though the subject material is dense. It can take a while to really wrap your mind around it all. My Biopsych class in Fall I think was one of the first to use it so the website wasn't completely functional yet which kind of sucked. It lacked those extra study resources. It is cool to have a book that has such up to date information in it. Even mentions Pixar's Inside Out which just came out earlier this year.

I usually don't read books like this because the tone in a lot of these types of books are pretty boring. Spectacular, however, found a way to write a book that was informative and funny at the same time. While you're reading it, you'll feel that Spectacular is a good friend of yours who is simply trying to give you great advice.

This book was so funny/entertaining and RIGHT ON about love, dating, fighting with your man/woman, communicating, getting through hard time, and loving thru good times. He tells the story about his love with his girlfriend and their child. In addition to being a famous rapper, he's a man who knows how to be everything for his woman. MEN need to read this! His advice is different from what you hear all the time because he speaks the truth! It didn't take long to read. Binged in one sitting. I laughed, got mad, had tears in my eye one or two times. I'll be smarter about love having read this!

Masterfully Arranged Classic Masterpieces

I am delighted with my acquisition of Lee Evans’ anthology of 27 arrangements of Classical masterpieces. Collectively, these renditions are tastefully infused with a cornucopia of jazz elements, devices, modes of expression, styles, varying tempos, as well as wide range of rhythmic patterns and harmonic structures that are engaging, enlightening and inspiring. Additionally, each transcription is professionally annotated with performance nuances. For those aspiring to be as accomplished as possible, the greater array of major and minor keys are utilized as is full range of the keyboard. Most inspiring are the flawless digital recordings artistically performed by Lee Evans - available at the publisher’s website for playback and/or downloading. In summary, this superb anthology delivers a musically educational and enriching experience by substantially expanding one’s palette of jazz elements suitable for arranging, composing and interpreting all kinds of music. Lee Evans's New Classy Jazz Arrangements of the Classics

This is another delightful volume from the prolific and always elegant Lee Evans, but this is a new departure for Dr. Evans.
Instead of original compositions or jazz arrangements of songs from the "great American songbook," we are treated to twenty-seven famous classical themes that are lightly seasoned with jazz "spices" harmonically and/or rhythmically. The settings are always tasteful, and the classical themes upon which these arrangements are made are always treated with respect and are in the foreground, to be savored within these delicious lightly jazz-tinted treatments. If you are a fan of the arrangements of Lee Evans and you love classical music as well, I can't recommend this volume highly enough. For that matter, if you are not very familiar with jazz but are familiar with classical music, then I believe you will enjoy reading through these lightly jazz-seasoned settings to enjoy some of the old classical "chestnuts" in new settings.
As mentioned above, these arrangements show considerable respect for original scores. And if your situation is the opposite, and you are familiar with jazz but not so familiar with classical music, then you are in for a treat here since you will get to taste some of the most famous and most beautiful melodies in classical music, "lightly seasoned" with some jazz harmonizations and rhythms with which you might be familiar.
In short, this volume is a keeper, one I highly recommend to all lovers of beautiful music for the piano! I have read through all of the pieces in "Classics With a Touch of Jazz," and they all have something unique to offer. They are generally in the intermediate range of difficulty. Another great thing about this volume is that it gives you a code to access recordings by Lee Evans of all the pieces, and that really helps if you have any questions about a given rhythm, tempo, etc. Dr. Evans, by the way, is a marvelous pianist, and you will surely enjoy having the audio access that you can download or "stream" through the code given in the book.

Before signing off here, I'd also like to mention that book stays open easily and you won't be constantly fighting the binding to keep the book open!

I keep coming back to the settings by Dr. Evans of the 2nd movement of Marcello's Oboe Concerto, (one of my favorite arrangements in the book) Tchaikovsky's "Andante Cantabile," (Op. 11, 2nd movement), Massenet's "Meditation," Elgar's "Salut d'amour," Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23--the 2nd movement theme,(this arrangement is gorgeous and shows you just how effective a sensitive and creative amalgam of classical music and jazz can be) Ravel's "À la manière de Borodine," (a really choice bit of Ravel that is a special treat!) and Schumann's "chestnut of chestnuts," the "Träumerei" set here in a jazz harmonization that will definitely surprise you!

If you enjoy this new volume by Lee Evans even a tenth as much as I am enjoying it, it will have have been worth the purchase!
