This book is not up to the standards of the For Dummies series of books. It more like a pdf copy of a power point presentation. A trivial and trite writing style that irritates rather than enlightens. It is just a rehash of every boring corporate training session you have had to endure. Don't waste your time.

About the Author
Dadi Janki is a woman of wisdom. Her life's journey has been a fulfillment of her early childhood longing to know and come close to God.

Dadi was born in 1916 in India to a devout and philanthropic family. She had no formal education beyond the age of fourteen, her studies being mainly of the scriptures. At the age of twenty-one she joined the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University and has dedicated her life to the spiritual service of others.

Disregarding the constraints of social conventions including the caste system, Dadi Janki became one of the few active women spiritual leaders just following India's independence, traveling throughout India, teaching self-reliance and empowering women to become leaders in their communities. Her concern for the well-being of others has always been a driving force in her life. Much of her youth was spent in serving the sick by comforting them with religious stories and humble prayers. Indeed, her own life has been filled with illness, which tested and helped her to develop her own ability to conquer physical infirmity through greater spiritual awareness.

Dadi campaigns for truth and works tirelessly for world peace. She travels worldwide, teaching and sharing her wisdom and deep spiritual knowledge. She is a soul who refuses to set limits and boundaries as to what is achievable and, in so doing, inspires other to believe that they, too, can make the impossible possible. Recognized worldwide for the depth and insight of her lectures and spiritual classes, her words of wisdom have given wings to countless souls.

Since arriving in London in 1974, Dadi has overseen the expansion of the Brahma Kumaris' work in more than 70 countries and is now the university's co-administrative head. Dadi is one of the Wisdom Keepers, an eminent group of spiritual leaders convened at United Nations conferences. She is also founder and president of the Janki Foundation for Global Health care and vice president of the World Congress of Faiths.

The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University's purpose is to help people explore their highest level of personal integrity and the attributes of leadership. This unique method of education in human moral and spiritual values was initiated in 1936 and is currently offered in over 70 countries.

Horton aspires to a world in which all "people are of worth . . . you not only have to love and respect people, but you have to think in terms of building a society that people can profit most from, and that kind of society has to work on the principle of equality." His Long Haul to help build such a world has led him from a Depression-era Tennessee family to the founding of the Highlander Folk School to a world-renowned position in the field of community education. From 1932 to its abrupt, politically motivated closing in 1961, the Highlander Folk School was a pioneer in experience-based education to address societal inequality in southern Appalachia. This book is primarily a treatise on the beliefs which governed Horton's life, rather than a traditional autobiography. A lesson to Learn Now More than Ever

How a group of caring people can be transformed into a catalyst for social change. Myles Horton, and threads of the humanity who made up the Highlander School, championed the Appalachian working class, empowering them to stand up to the factory owners and politicians who used their lack of education against them. By respecting the knowledge and intelligence of the poorest, Mr. Horton was able to win the proud mountain people's respect and trust and help them to understand the foundations of the democracy within which they lived.
This book has a great deal to teach about democracy, about learning, about our society's prejudices built on race, sex and education. It is a book about inspiration, about defining and learning about your own beliefs and where you stand on important issues that effect all of humanity today. Read this book for the history, to learn about the strength of a man and a group who followed their beliefs...but you will find yourself, in the end, learning about yourself.

A must for all in adult social justice education

In the 1970s, when I was a college student studying Appalachian sociology, Highlander was a golden beacon - the place where Rosa Parks learned civil disobedience! How I wish this book was available then. It's much more than an autobiography of Highlander's founder, Myles Horton. It's more than a history of Highlander. It explains how Horton and his associates evolved their methods of education. As part of a peace and justice start-up myself, I found myself thinking,"I must tell everyone about this idea!" and, "Oh, that happens to us, too." This book is an inspiration.

Changed my thinking

I was first introduced to THE LONG HAUL as a consequence of teaching a community organization course for which I had not been assigned for over 20 years. I felt I was out of my element. In seeking to prep myself for this course, I consulted key people in the US and my local community. I was prodded to read THE LONG HAUL. I must admit I was not enthusiastic. BIG MISTAKE!

After 30 years of reading social science research monographs, research proposals, dissertations, MSW theses, and textbooks, I would say that THE LONG HAUL is one of the most (and perhaps the most) profoundly important piece of literature I have read addressing the social service arena. Although it is an autobiography, it offers critical insight into the failure of social service delivery. Prior to reading THE LONG HAUL, I believed that the major failure of sociology and social work was the inability to construct a meaningful theory of cultural diversity. Social work's failure to shepherd recipients off of TANF is associated with a lack of cultural understanding. Clearly, what we need is a theory for guidance.

In his autobiography, Myles Horton takes us to the threshold of theory construction. Much of what "works" is counterintuitive. For example, if the police are monitoring Horton's actions because the authorities fear he will instigate a communist upraising, Horton will seek out the police. He would thank them for escorting him to his destination and explain to them his plans. The police move into a state of utter confusion. They are put in a position where they must walk with him rather then concealing themselves. Clearly, he knows what he is doing, but is unable to explain his actions that would enable readers to generalize these actions. The capacity of generalize and to use this generalization for an alternative environment is the heart of sociological theory. We learn how society functions by identifying patterns and see if they exist (or work) in other arenas.

Perhaps theory construction is not possible. Perhaps cultural influences are so uniquely situated that a generalization from one arena to another is not possible. What is the common theme found in all of Horton's successes? I think the answer is LISTENING. However, Horton's form of listening is not the type of listening I was taught nor the kind of listening I read in cutting edge research and respected textbooks. It is, in fact, NOT the empathic listening. I do not believe that words exists which capture the essence of this type of Horton's listening, but I believe the concept of "blind" listening comes close. In addition, sociological frameworks such as Interactionalism and Phenomenology employ terms like "bracketing." Bracketing comes close, but does not hit the bull's eye. Social workers must spend more time understanding Horton's methodology of listening, analyzing what he heard, and acting upon his analysis.

I do not recall reading any book that had such a profound effect on my thinking. This autobiography is not merely the story of Myles Horton's life but rather a roadmap for improved social service delivery and empowerment. Every social worker should read this book -- even clinicians. In fact, I would say that any social work student who does not thoroughly enjoy this book, needs to change majors.

About the Author
Daniel J. Treier (PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is Blanchard Professor of Theology at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He is the coeditor of nine books and author of three, including Virtue and the Voice of God and Introducing Theological Interpretation of Scripture.

Mark Husbands (Ph.D., University of St. Michael's College) is Leonard and Marjorie Maas Associate Professor of Reformed Theology at Hope College. He has also taught at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, USA, and at Tyndale College and Seminary and Sheridan College in Toronto. While a Masters student at Wycliffe College at the Toronto School of Theology, he was senior editor of Prolegomena, an academic journal in theology.

Professor Husband's academic work demonstrates a serious engagement with the work of Barth, Calvin, Luther and Jungel and extends to a consideration of reconciliation, theological anthropology and political theology. He is the author of the monograph Barth's Ethics of Prayer and Biographical Dictionary of Evangelicals. He and Daniel J. Treier are editors of Justification: What's at Stake in the Recent Debates recently published by IVP. He is also editor of Theology and the End of Modernity: Essays in Conversation with Reginald Stackhouse and with Philip G. Ziegler co-edited Essays Catholic and Critical.. Husbands is also the editor of The Community of the Word.


Roger Lundin (Ph.D., University of Connecticut) is Blanchard Professor of English at Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL. He is the author of many books and articles including Nature to Experience: The American Search for Cultural Authority, Emily Dickinson and the Art of Belief, The Culture of Interpretation: Christian Faith and the Postmodern World and The Promise of Hermeneutics (with Anthony Thiselton and Clarence Walhout). He has also edited several issues of Religion and Literature and books including Disciplining Hermeneutics: Interpretation in Christian Perspective. He is a 1999 Christianity Today Book Award Winner.

Beauty causes us to worship God and is personified in Christ

Christ's beauty is reflected in the fullness of God's character revealed in Him and the creation Christ set in motion through His Word.

“Worship is the submission of all of our nature to God.
It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness,
Nourishment of mind by His truth,
Purifying of imagination by His beauty,
Opening of the heart to His love,
And submission of will to his purpose.
And all this gathered up in adoration is the greatest of human expressions of which we are capable.”

And I would add, enabled by our faith in Him from His grace to us by His Spirit of truth because of His love for us seen in His Son Jesus Christ.

About the Author
GEORGE M. COLE is a registered land surveyor and civil engineer, specializing in riparian and maritime boundaries and geodesy. Mr. Cole was first exposed to water boundaries while serving as an officer of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. He subsequently served as the Florida State Cadastral Surveyor and as owner/manager of a surveying and engineering consulting firm specializing in water boundaries. Currently, he coordinates consultant contracting for the Florida Department of Transportation. Mr. Cole received a BS from Tulane University and an MS from Florida State University. A prolific writer, he is the author of several surveying texts, and his numerous articles have appeared in both professional journals and law reviews.

About the Author
PETER AUGHTON was born in Southport and educated at King George V School. He has always been fascinated by the great city of Liverpool and his earliest memories are of the Mersey ferries, the Overhead Railway and the shipping, the trams and the post war bomb sites. Peter has been a member of the Liverpool and District Family History Society for many years and he still gives occasional talks to the society. He is a lecturer at the University of the West of England, and his career includes twelve years in the aerospace industry.

Quite Readable History

Liverpool: A People's History by Peter Aughton is a very readable and enjoyable history of the English city which grew from a tiny fishing village to become recently named the European Capital of Culture! The author makes the history of this little town on the Mersey River come alive as he uses excellent research to trace the history and grown until it became a city thriving in 1207 with its major seaport. It survived the horrors of the slave trade, built the world's very first pulic railway, and in the 18th century was a fashionable spa. But then t he major slump came when millions departed for a better way of life in the New World. But regrowth came in the next century and today this is a very special city with a unique history. Even if you are not a Brit, you'll enjoy this book and want to visit there.

The African Bible is the record of the Abyssinian prophets who came to Africa from Jerusalem in around 600 Bc.
