The sign is small, tucked into the corner of Mr. Clutter s bookshop window: Adventurers Wanted. Apply Within. No one but fifteen-year-old Alex Taylor even seems to notice it is there. And for Alex, who has wished for a change in his life, it is an irresistible invitation. Upon entering Mr. Clutter s shop, Alex is swept away to a faraway land filled with heroic warriors, mysterious elves, and hard-working dwarves. Alex becomes the eighth man in a band of adventurers seeking the lair of Slathbog the Red an evil dragon with a legendary treasure. Along the way, Alex and his new friends must battle dangerous trolls and bandits, face undead wraiths, and seek the wisdom of the Oracle in her White Tower. Alex s adventure takes him to distant and exotic lands where he learns about courage, integrity, honor, and, most important, friendship.

When Alex sees the sign “Adventurers Wanted: Apply Within” in a shop window, he can’t help but inquire. He is soon steamrolled into his first adventure by the shop owner, finding himself packed off to a fantasy world as the eighth member of a group going after the dragon Slathbog. This first novel plays out like a game of Dungeons and Dragons, with the reader in the role of Alex as he learns to play, making the story entertaining but disappointing in its lost potential. Nearly every genre cliché since Tolkien is present, yet Forman does nothing new with his cool premise; the quest and Alex himself are led through predictable paces. While Alex is an agreeable character, he is too perfect to be credible: after the umpteenth time praise is heaped upon him for something that he did accidentally or much too easily, readers will be rolling their eyes. Still, the laws in the Adventurer’s Handbook that govern the group are an entertaining remix of the laws that govern RPGs, and the camaraderie among the group members is a strong draw. For those looking for a straightforward, uncomplicated quest, this will do the trick, and the series potential is limitless. Grades 5-8. --Krista Hutley
Review
When Alex Taylor enters a shop with a strange sign that seems to change every time he looks at it, he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. Alex soon finds himself joining 7 other adventurers on a quest to slay an evil dragon and recover its hoard. Along the journey, he discovers amazing things about himself and forms incredible friendships. In classic epic fantasy form, this is a fantastic journey of a young man who comes to his own, while learning about the strange world around him. In a world of elves, dwarves, wizards, and other mystical creatures, magic is almost commonplace. And Alex is fascinated with it all. He is a likeable character and his companions even more so. The story reminded me a lot of Eragon, yet the reading is easier and quicker. Highly enjoyable, fast-paced, and full of adventure; Adventurers Wanted: Slathbogs Gold will definitely be making my list of top childrens books for 2009. Fantasy fans of all ages will enjoy this high fantasy romp. --Sci Fi Chick.com

Great book for Kids
By Julieosis
Alex Taylor is not having a good day. He didn't mean to drop all the glasses and break them. Besides it was his cousin's fault. Thinking that a brisk walk would clear his head, Alex wanders down a street and happens to see a sign in the window of a bookshop: Adventurers Wanted, apply within.
Curious, Alex enters the store and before he knows it he is signing a contract to go on an adventure with an Elf and a Dwarf. With the rest of his company Alex goes on the adventure of a lifetime searching for the evil dragon Slathbog and pursuing his legendary treasure.
But there is something different about Alex from his other companions. Right from the beginning Alex is tagged as a magic user. Alex must come to terms with this and find his inner magic in order to help his team and reach his final goal.
I was glued to "Slathbog's Gold" right from the first page. I guess I would describe it as a mix of Lord of the Rings and World of Warcraft genre with a little Harry Potter thrown in for good measure. Fans of HP will definitely flock to "Slathbog's Gold". The thing to keep in mind is that "Slathbog" was definitely written for a younger audience. The writing is more similar to "Charlie Bone" than full-out "Harry Potter." Adults may find the writing tedious and undescriptive, but kids (who the book was written for) will love it, and it's a story they can read themselves which always gets points in my YA books.
I truly enjoyed "Slathbog's Gold." I thought it was a fun adventure with likable characters and a fantastic goal at the end. It really was a fun book, and I can't wait to read the next installment.
On the flipside, I did read another pretty scathing review that accused Forman of all but plagiarizing "The Hobbit." Now, I have not read "The Hobbit," so I cannot say how similar or dissimilar the plots are, but "Slathbog" does have certain "Lord of the Rings" characteristics to it, but I really don't find this distracting from the overall story. Forman obviously had his own ideas to tell an adventure story for kids. If he was inspired by the works of other authors, big deal! A good writer is someone who reads right? No matter how similar or not to another work, I believe Forman accomplished his goal: to write an exciting and magical YA book, and that is just what "Slathbog's Gold" turned out to be.

Adventurous Readers Wanted :)
By VW Smith
This book was recommended to me months ago by my older daughter. I finally saw it at the library and it made for a great fun summer read. It's definitely going to be a series but this first volume is well contained and it's not going to drive me crazy just because I can't get the next book for a year. My nine year old son loves it and is looking forward to more of the same. The dragons, quests, magic and especially those great magical traveling bags keep his interest and has encouraged him to up the level of books he reads on his own. It also makes a great family read out loud book. Alex the main character is fun to follow and the young boys can relate well to him. Enjoy!

Could have been better
By xFiendFyre
I did enjoy this book, but I can't say it's among the best I've read. While there's a good moral of the story, it bothers me how very undeveloped a lot of the characters are, and for some reason all of these seasoned fighters wholly accept a young, inexperienced boy who is completely foreign to their world and ways, to go on a dangerous adventure with them to kill an evil dragon. The author takes a little too much time to explain things and Alex seems to be a natural at everything he does.
All of that said, it was still an enjoyable book to read, but I probably wouldn't read it again.
