Sandra Rendgen is an art historian who has worked for both print and interactive media. After completing her studies in Amsterdam and Berlin, she contributed as a picture editor to German magazines and newspapers, such as Vanity Fair, Die Welt am Sonntag, and to TASCHEN’s Interiors Now! As an editor, she develops interactive media installations for various museums and institutions.

Data are complicated. Statistics are a challenge. Knowledge translation is important. The Atlas of Infographics uses artistic design to convey information into knowledge that everyone can understand. The understanding of data is not only for the elite. Infographics are both entertaining and contribute to understanding. This is the "Atlas" of the future and, as usual, produced by Taschen in top quality print. Now that we have the World Wide Web and Wikipedia, this will take the place of the Encyclopedia Britannica on your bookshelf. Combining science and art, it is another treasure from Taschen.

Taschen's Understanding The World : Atlas Of Infographics is an expansive visual atlas that presents the most exciting, creative and inspiring ways of explaining the world in information graphics.

Featuring some 280 graphics in total, the book is divided into 5 chapters - environment, technology, economics, society, and culture to reveal some of the Earth's greatest intricacies in accessible visual form, all housed in a massive hardcover tome.

Each piece of infographic is cramped full of figures and facts but the huge amount of information presented is always well complemented by the beautifully designed visuals, making reading an enjoyment.

It's quite impossible not to learn a thing or two about the planet on which we live in, even if you only browse through just a couple of pages from this gigantic volume. Imagine what you will reap if you read it from cover to cover. My highest recommendations.

feel the lack of something..

To my opinion, the merit of this book is that it gives good basic knowledge about assembler and loader. Especially, the chapter about loader is very clearly written. I think that it's better than Levin's book (Linkers and Loaders).
However, the level of information is too low. If you are under-graduate student and don't have many experience about the assembly programming, this book is helpful to raise your level in system programming. But to experienced engineer, I think it will be a disappointing book.
I'd like to recommend this book as the introductory book or the summary of assembler, link and loader, compiler, os, software engineering, and so forth.

The easy path to System Software

After working on C, C++ and a little bit of Assembly languages, you feel excited about the knowledge & underlying mechanisms of assemblers, loaders and linkers etc. I have gone through this book and found it extremely helpful in getting the complex concepts of system softwares. I agree with the idea of author to give the concepts on the basis of a hypothetical machine, rather than going into the complex details of any real system. This provides a big scope of the subject, giving
you the ability to feel at ease with any system.
What I like most in this book is that, its not so big and with just eight chapters, you feel comfortable about the idea of reading the book.
I think, its a must to read book for computer science students.

Pretty Good

I found this book to be a pretty decent guide to understanding basic compilers structures. The reason I give it a four is because it's verbiage was a bit difficult to understand at times. The author begins by using a very novel example of a simple CPU and explains how to write an assembler for it and then a compiler. When you are done reading it you should be able to go off an write a pretty simple assembler, compiler and interpreter. (I did!)

With the aim of describing how security is taken in England specifically, the book offers guidance on both the legal principles and practical issues involved in both sides of a transaction, whether the objective is to take security or challenge it.

`I have attempted to explain the underlying principles of the law of security and how they operate in practice,' says author, Richard Calnan, a partner at Norton Rose. Cases are used selectively to illustrate the principles which underlie the law of security. The overall emphasis is on those issues deemed to be the most important in practice.

Recently published by Jordans, this, the second edition of this authoritative work, incorporates a number of changes to the law that have taken place since the first edition was published in the spring of 2006.

As of October 2011, for example, `the requirement to register charges created by overseas companies has been abolished -- and although, no fundamental change has taken effect as a result of case-law, the book does include a number of important recent cases. Other new developments include changes introduced under the Companies Act 2006... changes to the financial collateral Directive...and the Rome I Regulation which has replaced the Rome convention.

Other changes now in progress include the registration procedure for English companies, which are proceeding slowly with a view, ultimately, to streamlining the registration process. Once such changes are brought into effect -- probably by mid-2013 -- Calnan anticipates producing a third edition.

In the meantime, this book is a real time-saver for busy practitioners, particularly those whose clients are involved in cross-border issues. Clearly written and logically laid out for ease of use, the book is divided into seven sections to include: types of security...creating security...priority of security...enforcing security...security arising by operation of law...alternatives to security...and international security, (pertaining to cross-border transactions).

As you would expect, the book provides excellent resources for further research, with over twenty pages of tables of statutes, statutory instruments and cases and a useful index at the back. The law is stated as at October 2011.

Common Sense Book on Program Management

I've read the book from cover to cover and it's a excellent pragmatic book that explains how to manage both small and large programs. I can easily see myself using this as a reference for many years to come especially when I find myself trying to figure out how to handle one of the many of situations the author describes in his book.

The chapter on attributes of an effective Program Manager was really helpful to me as I was in the process of assigning one of my staff as a Program Manager. When I read the simple to understand attributes it really helped me to focus in on who on my staff could do the role. Additionally, it was an excellent guide for my selected Program Manager to use to understand what my expectations of him was.

The chapter that covered stakeholder management was another excellent chapter that I have sense asked all of my Program AND Project managers to read. I did this because it's an excellent chapter on helping the Program and Project Managers to understand what stakeholders REALLY expect of them. Additionally he goes over the types of stakeholders that you can run into and simple yet effective methods to work effective with them. For example he talks about the meddling stakeholder which all Program and Project managers run into. Here he guides you though why they might be meddling, such as they recently got burned by a prior project or there is a distrust with the organization. In these situations he recommends on involving them through many tasks and details. They want to meddle great jump in the mud, roll up your sleeves and help, otherwise step back and let those truly involved in the project get the work done while properly informing all stakeholders.
Over all this book is a really good and easy read.

Excellent, Practical, Indispensable

Not just a great book on program management, but perhaps the best book on overall project management I have ever read.
Mr. Brown does an excellent job breaking down the challenges facing a program manager at any level. He writes not from a theoretical perspective, but directly from being mentored by the best, and having experience in project and program management in NASA.
Pretty much the diametric opposite of the PMBOK, this book is extremely practical, and the suggestions can be immediately implemented regardless of industry.
Expensive for a Kindle book, and well worth it.

Graduate level poker

When I saw the title of the book, I understood immediately the reason behind it. I noticed that some others on the forums were confused by it or thought it didn’t make much sense. But if you’ve read Mathematics of Poker or similar analyses, you have to have some idea of what position you will end up in when you make earlier decisions. If you don’t, you could end up playing your hand face-up on the River. And since the pot is the largest on the River, you are giving away a huge amount of equity if your opponent knows this. Getting this street right will make it easier for you to plan your hand from the Flop on.

I have played limit hold’em far more than no-limit, so I’m looking for ways to understand the transition, what to think about, what things to think about differently, and so on. This book is a great way for me to put those pieces together and be able to apply those principles on real hands.

One of those important differences is that it’s not just understanding your opponent’s range but how your bet sizing will affect the way your opponent splits his range into fold, call, and raise. In limit, you have one bet size to choose from, and you have far less reason to bet-fold. But here, you have to figure out where you’re getting optimal value by adjusting from min-bet to all-in.

The author points out early on that because there are so many small variables that go into a situation, you can play around with those variables to produce 20 variations on any particular hand example. So, let’s say you have the same betting sequence and board cards, but instead of assuming the opponent is loose-passive, we assume weak-tight. How does that change what range they show up with? How does that change our optimal play? It can be wildly different, from betting large to just checking it down because we have no value bet any longer. Or just change the River card to any of the other 45 possibilities. Or assume the Turn was a bet-call instead of checked through.

As someone who has read a lot of poker books, there’s always a bit of drudgery in the beginning of each one where the author feels obliged to go over the fundamentals again: what is EV, how do you calculate pot odds, what is a semi-bluff, etc. There’s none of that here, and it’s really refreshing. Even some of the more advanced stuff like different range shapes is covered in previous books, and you don’t get wasted pages going over those terms again. If you don’t know those concepts yet, you shouldn’t be starting this book anyway. And I’m glad the author stuck to that position.

The book is organized very logically. The first section is Bet or Check, from both in position and out of position, and the second section is Fold, Call, or Raise, again from both IP and OoP. There are lots of hand examples, quizzes, and so on. The text layout is very easy to read as different sections are highlighted, certain important nuggets are set off in bold, and it is overall visually engaging. I can understand why the large hardcover size was chosen, and it would be a very different reading experience to try to condense it into a paperback format. I usually prefer everything on pdf, but it's like having a poker textbook to study out of, and that makes for a very different reading experience, too. If they taught poker at a graduate level, this is what the textbooks would look like.

There is no index or glossary, but it has a compilation of the various Nuggets throughout the text in the very back, along with page references if you want to go back and re-read that section again. Given the logic of the layout, it shouldn’t be hard to find any particular topic anyway.

You will learn not only "what" to do but more importantly "why" so you can assess your own play. Unlike other poker authors who only back up their statements with their "experience", QTip explains everything with simple, solid math. There are a LOT of calculations and charts in this book, and they lay out information in some ways that are eye-opening to say the least.

The book focuses only on the river, with two huge benefits. Mainly, it makes analysis a lot simpler for teaching purposes; also, since pots and bets are biggest on the river, improving play on this street will directly improve your winrate a fair bit.

Just a warning, this is not a book for people who want quick answers, a system, or secret moves; it's here for those willing to put in work to learn accurate EV-based poker thinking. It's like a college textbook: very densely packed with information, and filled with examples and exercises.

One of the best technically sound authors in the game. This book reads like a college math book that gives you lots of homework to practice on.

Adults who want to learn a foreign language are often discouraged because they believe they cannot acquire a language as easily as children. Once they begin to learn a language, adults may be further discouraged when they find the methods used to teach children don't seem to work for them. What is an adult language learner to do? In this book, Richard Roberts and Roger Kreuz draw on insights from psychology and cognitive science to show that adults can master a foreign language if they bring to bear the skills and knowledge they have honed over a lifetime. Adults shouldn't try to learn as children do; they should learn like adults.

Roberts and Kreuz report evidence that adults can learn new languages even more easily than children. Children appear to have only two advantages over adults in learning a language: they acquire a native accent more easily, and they do not suffer from self-defeating anxiety about learning a language. Adults, on the other hand, have the greater advantages -- gained from experience -- of an understanding of their own mental processes and knowing how to use language to do things. Adults have an especially advantageous grasp of pragmatics, the social use of language, and Roberts and Kreuz show how to leverage this metalinguistic ability in learning a new language.

Learning a language takes effort. But if adult learners apply the tools acquired over a lifetime, it can be enjoyable and rewarding.

There are many books about language learning in general, but it's great to finally see this scientifically sound account of second language acquisition. I was constantly nodding my head at things that I know to be true as an experienced language learner and coach to language learners, explained in a no-nonsense way drawing on many valid sources. Recommended for people who want to know the facts about adult foreign language acquisition.

Richard Roberts, currently a Foreign Service Officer in the US Department of State, taught psychology in Europe and Asia with the University of Maryland University College. Roger Kreuz is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Memphis.

Entertaining, encouraging, practical

Finally, someone has written a book on the subject of adult language learning that is entertaining and engaging! Becoming Fluent offers encouragement and practical suggestions on how to improve your ability to learn a language for those looking to take on the task later in life. I wish I had this information years ago.

Where's the beef?

In the past twenty years, I've studied a number of different languages (nine) in an effort to narrow the list down to one that I hope to invest my time and energy into mastering. I've also spent that time teaching ESL, with a MA in TESL alongside. So I do not come to this book as a novice. But while I'm not quite sure what I was expecting from this book, what I got was a fluffy pop-sci approach that did not in any way illuminate the subject in a coherent way. I did not find anything inside its covers that would be of any use as a teacher or a learner; it is more of an apologist / cheerleader / self-help approach than it is either practical or theoretical. I guess I saw the publishing house and assumed it would be meaty.

I was wrong.

The very last section serves as a very good encapsulation of the book. The authors explain the historical arising of mnemonics, exhaust the reader with a number of different ways to remember a shopping list, then admit that the technique probably isn't so helpful for learning a foreign language.

I will happily save you the $14:
It's very, very difficult to learn a foreign language.
Older people can learn things.
You will forget things, but forgotten things can be remembered more easily.
Study often and in different ways.

I'd give it one star, but for someone who has never studied a foreign language, taken a psychology 101 course, or found a way to remember something, it might be of some slight use.

While as a German teacher I primarily teach high school age students, my experiences with small group adult classes and corporate tutoring made me interested in this book. I found this book to be very informative and much needed, as I tire of comments from people I meet who say "I learned Spanish/French/German in high school, and I can't speak any of it!" My hope is that more adults revisit and restart their language learning for career advancement or even the pure enjoyment of it. There's a glut of books out there about child learners, and this new book helps balance it all.
