Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism, by Michelle Goldberg

"A potent wakeup call to pluralists in the coming showdown with Christian nationalists."―Publishers Weekly, starred review

Michelle Goldberg, a senior political reporter for Salon.com, has been covering the intersection of politics and ideology for years. Before the 2004 election, and during the ensuing months when many Americans were trying to understand how an administration marked by cronyism, disregard for the national budget, and poorly disguised self-interest had been reinstated, Goldberg traveled through the heartland of a country in the grips of a fevered religious radicalism: the America of our time. From the classroom to the mega-church to the federal court, she saw how the growing influence of dominionism-the doctrine that Christians have the right to rule nonbelievers-is threatening the foundations of democracy.

In Kingdom Coming, Goldberg demonstrates how an increasingly bellicose fundamentalism is gaining traction throughout our national life, taking us on a tour of the parallel right-wing evangelical culture that is buoyed by Republican political patronage. Deep within the red zones of a divided America, we meet military retirees pledging to seize the nation in Christ's name, perfidious congressmen courting the confidence of neo-confederates and proponents of theocracy, and leaders of federally funded programs offering Jesus as the solution to the country's social problems.

With her trenchant interviews and the telling testimonies of the people behind this movement, Goldberg gains access into the hearts and minds of citizens who are striving to remake the secular Republic bequeathed by our founders into a Christian nation run according to their interpretation of scripture. In her examination of the ever-widening divide between believers and nonbelievers, Goldberg illustrates the subversive effect of this conservative stranglehold nationwide. In an age when faith rather than reason is heralded and the values of the Enlightenment are threatened by a mystical nationalism claiming divine sanction, Kingdom Coming brings us face to face with the irrational forces that are remaking much of America.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In an impressive piece of lucid journalism, Salon.com reporter Goldberg dives into the religious right and sorts out the history and networks of what to most liberals is an inscrutable parallel universe. She deconstructs "dominion theology," the prevalent evangelical assertion that Christians have a "responsibility to take over every aspect of society." Goldberg makes no attempt to hide her own partisanship, calling herself a "secular Jew and ardent urbanite" who wrote the book because she "was terrified by America's increasing hostility to... cosmopolitan values." This carefully researched and riveting treatise will hardly allay its audience's fears, however; secular liberals and mainstream believers alike will find Goldberg's descriptions of today's culture wars deeply disturbing. She traces the deep financial and ideological ties between fundamentalist Christians and the Republican Party, and discloses the dangers she believes are inherent to the Bush administration's faith-based social services initiative. Other chapters follow inflammatory political tactics on wedge issues like gay rights, evolution and sex education. Significantly, her conclusions do not come off as hysterical or shrill. Even while pointing to stark parallels between fascism and the language of the religious right, Goldberg's vision of America's future is measured and realistic. Her book is a potent wakeup call to pluralists in the coming showdown with Christian nationalists. (May 15)

Scary, important reading
By Rabbi Ruth Adar
Michelle Goldberg has researched and written an important book, one that will provoke discussion. I was impressed by the depth and breadth of her research and of the interviews with the people she writes about. She claims her biases up front.

The most important aspect of the book is a delineation of the opposing world-views she describes, something that may be news to blue-staters: there are two competing views of American and world history, two competing standards for "science," two competing notions of reality in American life today: an Enlightenment/humanist viewpoint and a viewpoint from which the Christian God, as interpreted by the Christian Right, is King of the United States. She suggests that dialogue between the two is impossible because there is so little common ground, and that those on the center and left underestimate the seriousness of the challenge to the U.S. Constitution and values.

My only gripe with this book is that the scenario she paints is so dark that many readers may be tempted to defend themselves against the thought, rather than against the threat. She is describing real institutions, real people, real organizations whose own mission statements can be checked out with a few keystrokes at the keyboard.

This is a must-read book for anyone who values free speech, freedom of religion, or is concerned for the way their tax dollars are spent.

In defense of justice, reason and fairness
By Malvin
"Kingdom Coming" by Michelle Goldberg is a cautionary tale about Christian Nationalism and its threat to the Enlightenment values that are crucial to maintaining a modern democratic state as we know it today. Ms. Goldberg has done a superb job of surveying the movement, its leaders and its political ideals. Through her remarkable first-hand reporting and analysis, the author helps us understand that a liberal response articulating why rationality matters is urgently needed to counteract the forces of irrationality that threaten to undo our country.

Ms. Goldberg explains how homeschooling has allowed superstition to be instilled in a generation of young people who are being encouraged to become politically active. Exurban megachurches provide organizers with millions of voters and activists who can be rapidly mobilized around Christian causes. The author dedicates individual chapters to discussing six areas where extremist positions have gained ground, including: revisionism of U.S. history; anti-gay rights activism; intelligent design theory (Creationism); faith-based public services; abstinence; and the U.S. court system. As Ms. Goldberg clearly shows, the Christian movement's success has been substantial and in many cases has been attributable to sympathy and support at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

Significantly, Ms. Goldberg's comparative analysis shows that extremist Christian views have gained institutional support over time. For example, she compares how the Barry Goldwater campaign of 1964 shied away from the John Birch Society in order to distance itself from the admixture of militarism with religion to the Bush administration's embrace of General William G. Boykin after he had made several outlandish public statements about divine warfare. In fact, by appointing hundreds of ideologically sympathetic judges and bureaucrats to numerous positions within the federal government, Ms. Goldberg contends that the extremist Christian movement will continue to exert its influence for many years to come.

Drawing on the work of Hannah Arendt, Ms. Goldberg helps us consider how fascism finds fertile ground once all objective reason has been marginalized from public debate. The author attributes a peculiar form of Christian postmodernism, in its rejection of objective truth as myths that are propagated by the so-called liberal elite onto the unwilling Christian masses, to be responsible for fomenting a paranoid fanaticism that ultimately may prove to be a catalyst to inspiring violent action against all those who are different or who may object to the Christian agenda. But such concerns are not merely theoretical; Ms. Goldberg goes on to share the experiences of herself and others who have already suffered discrimination as a result of the works of Christian extremists.

Interestingly, Ms. Goldberg punctures the inflated claims of heartland moral superiority. The author points out that the "red states" where Christianity is strongest has higher divorce rates, lower education levels and are net debtors to the federal treasury when compared with the "blue states" where liberalism is strongest. The reality on the ground, then, suggests that the proclamations about Christian morals, Biblical guidance and American individualism are so much empty rhetoric; rather, such widely misheld beliefs probably provide simplistic answers to complex questions about changing economic, cultural and social conditions. While it is true that Ms. Goldberg does not propose a specific response to these underlying problems (which in any case would be beyond the scope of this book), her plea to liberals to stand up in defense of justice, reason and fairness is, in my view, totally appropriate: an enlightened, free and civil government is what is needed most to help solve the problems that plague the U.S. and the Christian community, and liberals need to make that fact better known.

I highly recommend this important book to everyone.

We ignore this book (and Christian nationalism) at our peril.
By Jason Mierek
As someone who grew up in a home influenced by apocalyptic Christian fundamentalism, I admit right up front that I will not attempt an "objective" review of this book (whatever that might mean). I agreed with the premise Michelle Goldberg outlines (i.e., that there is a powerful strand of politicized Christianity in the US that holds the Constitution in contempt and that seeks absolute political control---Goldberg calls them "Christian nationalists") before she ever set fingers to keyboard. Frankly, I was amazed at the empathy and understanding with which Michelle Goldberg approached this material, and found that one of the strongest features of this book. Another of the strengths is in her willingness to let her subjects speak for themselves. Oftentimes the most damning comments come straight from the mouths of the Christian nationalists themselves, and Goldberg does a fine job of putting these quotes into an overall context that should chill anyone who still appreciates the ideals of the Enlightenment.

For example, Goldberg repeatedly exposes a Manichean worldview in which the American body politic is literally divided into black and white, good and evil, with the Christian nationalists on one side and the rest of us on the other. (I leave it for you to guess which side is "good.") "Thus every political issue--indeed, every disputed aspect of our national life--is a struggle between good and evil" (p. 4). She quotes Pastor Rod Parsley: "Everyone asks, `Why is it so close?' The light is getting lighter and the dark is getting darker. These two opponents are not just opponents. This is a values situation. This is lightness and darkness!" (p. 51). As Goldberg sagaciously notes, people have a perfect right to this Manichean worldview, "yet when the United States government works this way, it turns all nonevangelicals into "the other side." The nonreligious are no longer even part of the debate..." (152). I would also note that in this view, the "wrongly religious" (i.e., those who don't accept a particular collection of tenets about God, the Bible, etc.) are also left out of the debate.

Of course, though, this point is moot, because making the US an overtly Christian country, in which the nonreligious and "wrongly religious" are second-class citizens at best, is one aspect of the Christian nationalist agenda: "Among [evangelicals and born-again Christians] there is substantial support for amending the United States Constitution to make Christianity the country's official religion..." (9). Leaving us out of the debate makes sense to Christian Reconstructionist theologian R.J. Rushdoony, who denounced democracy as a "heresy and `the great love of the failures and cowards of life'" (38). Whereas many try to sugarcoat this agenda for wider consumption, the raw truth is available for the flock: "Christians have an obligation, a mandate, a commission, a holy responsibility to reclaim the land for Jesus Christ--to have dominion in civil structures, just as in every other aspect of life and godliness. But it is dominion we are after. Not just a voice. It is dominion we are after. Not just influence. It is dominion we are after. Not just equal time. It is dominion we are after. World conquest. That's what Christ has commissioned us to accomplish" (p. 41, Goldberg quoting George Grant's The Changing of the Guard: Biblical Principles for Political Action.)

This antidemocratic, authoritarian philosophy can't stand up to the scrutiny of the contemporary world, though, and so, as Goldberg explores in the bulk of her book, the Christian nationalists have set to work building an alternate reality in which myth is science, fiction is history, and public policy is faith-based. From the continued intrusion of creationists in our public schools, to the campaign to refashion the Founding Fathers as Christian nationalists, to publicly funded abstinence-only sex education classes, there is a parallel reality alongside ours. "Originally, conservative Christian activists just wanted to keep Darwin and sex education out of schools. When that didn't work, they developed an alternative, quasi-scientific infrastructure that would legitimate their religious beliefs in secular terms, and which they hoped to use to replace the doctrines they objected to" (p. 138). "To the Christian nationalists...publicly funded religious social services auger nothing less than an epistemological revolution. They allow knowledge derived from the Bible to trump knowledge derived from studying the world. No longer would American policy and American civic life be based on facts available to all of us, on the kind of rationality that looks at `objective or even secular outcomes.' It would be based on faith" (p. 127). "What's lacking, though, isn't just truth--it's the entire social mechanism by which truth is distinguished from falsehood. Blunting Christian nationalism requires turning toward the Enlightenment and rebuilding a culture of rationalism. Unfortunately, multitudes of Americans no longer find Enlightenment values compelling" (p. 181).

That last sentence sums up what is possibly the biggest challenge posed by the theocratic right. Because they no longer find the Enlightenment values of empiricism and reason "compelling," they are assaulting the very criteria for establishing truth claims. Readers of this review may think this an exaggeration, but I can assure you from my experience as an undergraduate instructor that many students can no longer distinguish between fact and opinion, a consequence of twenty-plus years of a concentrated disinformation campaign. "This is a pattern that repeats itself again and again in the culture wars. When experts discredit some bit of fundamentalist orthodoxy, it's taken as further proof of the experts' bias. When religious conservatives are proven wrong, their faith in their righteousness only grows, along with their hatred of the conspiracy they see arrayed against them" (p. 78). "With no agreement on the most basic of facts or sources of authority, discussions between today's creationists and evolutionists seem particularly futile. Dialogue is impossible without some shared sense of reality" (p. 93). Lest the reader think this is merely an academic issue with no bearing on the real world, they need to remind themselves that this alternate reality is populated by pharmacists who confuse themselves with theologians and/or doctors: "A rash of Christian pharmacists have refused to fill prescriptions for both the morning-after pill and for ordinary oral contraceptives--180 such incidents were reported in one six-month period in 2004....In Denton, Texas, three pharmacists working at an Eckerd drug store refused to fill a rape victim's prescription for the morning-after pill" (p. 156). In other words, these ideas and beliefs have real consequences for people, especially for those who don't hold these ideas and beliefs.

Others have critiqued Goldberg for her comparisons to fascists, whom they usually equate unequivocally with Nazis. While comparisons to Nazis are always inflammatory and rarely helpful, we must remember that fascism has some definable characteristics and that most (if not all) of the movements Goldberg describes can be seen to share many of these characteristics. If it walks like duck, etc. Others have taken her to task for conflating Christian fundamentalists with Christian evangelicals with Christian nationalists with theocrats etc., implying that because the Christian nationalist movement is decentralized and diffuse that it is not real at all. These criticisms, all specious, are tactics employed by the theocratic right, along with a cynical use of "religious liberty," to pursue a pernicious agenda under the radar. We ignore Goldberg's book and the movements to which she alludes at our peril.

Women's History in Russia: (Re)Establishing the Field, by Marianna Muravyeva

This book is the first English language, all-Russian book on women's history, and translates the knowledge, theories and methodologies in use within Russian national historiography to tackle gender and women's history. It represents the research results of Russian gender and women's historians who are devoted to advancing women's rights and gender sensitive agenda in the Russian academic community and Russian society in general. This book appears in the context of a deep backlash from the liberal ideology of Russian modernization. This backlash has manifested itself in the constant and persistent calls for traditional values and the rebuke of gender as a concept, allowing people to choose their sex. Women have been expected to return to their "natural state" as mothers and housekeepers; feminism once again became a pre-condition for bad motherhood and a general threat to family and was even held responsible to "unnatural vices". Such an attack on gender and feminism as academic concepts and their further politicization makes women's history especially sound. It also prompts scholars to reflect on the reasons and roots of such hostility. Furthermore, it brings up the imminent question of what these traditional values are and where they come from. These are questions that this book answers.

Review
"This volume is most certainly a very welcome addition to the English-language literature on Russian and Soviet women's history, even more particularly so because it brings together a range of papers reflecting the current state of research on topics in this field from across the Russian regions. As such, its chapters serve to reorient the historical focus of research on Russian and Soviet women beyond the country's old and new capital cities. It is evident from the collection that some of the most exciting developments in the field are now taking place outside the major metropolitan centers of Moscow and St. Petersburg, which still remain the locations most often visited by western researchers and where most international collaboration is located. Also welcome is the fact that the individual chapters demonstrate the growing penetration and awareness of western historiographies and research methodologies in post-Soviet publications across the Russian Federation, and this opens up the prospects for the further development of cross-cultural exchange, networking, and the publication of shared and comparative findings." Steve Roman earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Columbia University. He is the author of 53 U.S. patents for agricultural and animal health products and processes. His 30-plus years of hands-on involvement with horses includes the breeding, raising, training and exhibiting of Morgan and Pinto show horses as well as the ownership of Thoroughbred racing and breeding stock. Although recognized primarily for the development of contemporary Dosage theory, Dr. Roman’s research also focuses on the details of Thoroughbred performance.

From the Introduction:

Contemporary Dosage methodology was introduced to Thoroughbred racing and breeding in Leon Rasmussen’s "Bloodlines" column in Daily Racing Form during the spring of 1981. It is a continuation and refinement of research initiated by Lt. Col. J.J. Vuillier in France a century ago and modified by the Italian Dr. Franco Varola in the 1960s. Unlike traditional pedigree analysis, Dosage attempts to identify key ancestors in a Thoroughbred pedigree and ascribe qualities to those ancestors that together describe the horse’s character or type. Despite fundamental philosophical differences among the various approaches to Dosage, they all agree on one thing — that the development of the Thoroughbred can be described through the influence of very few ancestors in any era.

Unlike the earlier forms of Dosage, the current technique involves extensive use of statistical analysis to test its premises. As a result, the reader will see numerous tables of data and charts within the text. Many of the charts display statistically generated trend lines that present relationships in a visual form for easier comprehension, the premise being that "a picture is worth a thousand words." Although somewhat technical, the subject matter is not academic. The concepts are accessible to everyone with an interest in how pedigree-performance relationships express themselves in the real world. On the other hand, the information is not merely anecdotal. This is not light storytelling. To fully understand the essence and utility of Dosage, readers will have to absorb the information presented and then draw conclusions for themselves. In addition, the author hopes that much of the data found in the tables and appendixes, while providing evidence in support of the ideas and concepts presented, will be used as basic reference material for owners, breeders, handicappers and general racing fans.

Although the author has written and lectured widely about contemporary Dosage for over 20 years, this is the first comprehensive and complete text on the subject by its creator.

Just another theory
By Philip Mann
It is an interesting theory and may give indication of likely distance progeny will handle but I won't be using it when we breed our thoroughbred mare. Too many influences are not taken into account.

A "1939 edition" Review
By Irene D. Chrest
I checked this "BOOK" out from a local library. It has no paper cover - I assume that in 1939 they did not have paper covers. The pictures in it are very old. Booth was a very handsome man. Too bad he didn't keep to acting. The book writes about his drinking. This stimulus had definitely given him the courage to kill Pres. Lincoln, plus the fact that he was a Southern sympathizer. The book wrote that Booth got in the theatre by telling the theatre's doorkeeper, that he "just" wanted to see Laura Keene's entrance from the front of the house. Not suspecting anything, he grinned and told him to "Go right in". BOOTH thinks that by eliminating President Lincoln he will have done more for his country than Jefferson Davis and/or Robert E. Lee did. He plans to ride South, then continue on to Mexico and perhaps even Spain. He shoots Lincoln in the back of the head. As he is riding out of town he hears the word "rebels" and then he heard say "Some bastard by the name of Booth done it, a theatre actor."

I'm half-way through the book but it is captivating so I thought I should write a quick note to challenge you to see if you can this old book - I'm sure you will be captivated by this author's talent.

I could feel the emotional evolutio of John Wilkis Booth
By Shigeru Harimoto
Although book itself was too old and under miserable conditions which caused Amazon or seller to refund all money I paid,to that action I apreciated very much first.

However,it is cinical enough that this book turned out to be my best book I ever read concerning Lincoln assasination. To tell the truth, I remember an book titled same as this book maybe two decades ago.I dont know that was the same one as this.however, this time I read from the begnning to the end very quickly, like one week just in the bed only small amount of time before I become sleepy, and tell you what, biggest trouble I had was neither its oldness which made me difficult to read, nor miserable conditions, but this book made me very difficult to sleep by abanndoning to read. While I was living in the US in 1990' s,I visited Ford Theater and knew all the rough story about actor and assasin John Wilkis Booth.
But in this book,I could feel the ever changing emotions of assasin John Wilkis Booth as vividly as I am talking or escaping together with him.Very old but fantastic book which,is worthy of giving the name of best creative nonfiction to the book and to the auther.
Thanks to Amazon and the seller to whom I dont know.

Adorable, Fictional Account of the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
By Abigail Scott
Stern tells his story as though he were writing a novel, complete with dialogue and imagined scenes between his "characters." As such his book will be quite useless to conventional researchers, however, his narrative is certainly entertaining and helps to show the evolving 20th century misconceptions about the Lincoln assassination and John Wilkes Booth.

The Matter of Revolution: Science, Poetry, and Politics in the Age of Milton, by John Rogers

John Rogers here addresses the literary and ideological consequences of the remarkable, if improbable, alliance between science and politics in seventeenth-century England. He looks at the cultural intersection between the English and Scientific Revolutions, concentrating on a body of work created in a brief but potent burst of intellectual activity during the period of the Civil Wars, the Interregnum, and the earliest years of the Stuart Restoration. Rogers traces the broad implications of a seemingly outlandish cultural phenomenon: the intellectual imperative to forge an ontological connection between physical motion and political action.

Review
"Rogers, who moves easily between obscure scientific treatise and the poetry of Milton and Marvell, shows how thinking about physical motion―the relation between objects and systems―was enmeshed with thinking about political action, and suggests that the Vitalist Moment helped spawn what would become political liberalism."―The New Yorker

"This is one of the most original and prospectively seminal studies to date of a particular era, the brief period between 1649 and 1666, the so-called 'Vitalist Moment,' which encompasses the English civil wars, the interregnum, and the onset of the Stuart Restoration. . . . Rogers is always decorous, deeply insightful, cogent, and lucid. The deeper value of this book . . . derives from its astute analysis of an intellectual climate. Intellectual history at its best. Most highly recommended."―Choice

"An important book. . . Rogers draws a vivid picture of an intellectual movement with implications that cut across the ideological spectrum, and he offers an ingenious account of how those implications were worked out . . . Students of the intersections of poetry, politics, and science cannot afford to miss this book."―Modern Philology

"A fascinating book that sheds light on a wide range of issues that were absolutely central to seventeenth-century English culture. Rogers helps to reconfigure the fault lines between seventeenth-century literary, scientific, and political discourses, and he provides genuinely new readings of some of the major literary figures of the age."―Victoria Kahn, University of California, Berkeley

Excellent
By Brian D'Amato
A masterful study of how the novel ideas of Milton's time inform his vocabulary and thought. Rogers is especially attentive to the differences between our notions of "science" and those of the early Enlightenment. Essential.

The Last Daughter of Prussia, by Marina Gottlieb Sarles

Toward the end of World War II, as Germany's hold on East Prussia grows increasingly tenuous, a childhood friendship between Manya Von Falken, the daughter of an aristrocratic family, and Joshi Karas, a Romani doctor, blossoms into unlikely love. But the young lovers are torn apart.

Captured by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp, Joshi fights for survival, while Manya and her family flee and embark on ''The Great Trek'' out of East Prussia. Based on true stories passed down to author Marina Gottlieb Sarles from her grandparents, survivors of the trek, The Last Daughter of Prussia also tells the story of the brave Trakehner horses who led their owners across a dangerous frozen lagoon, the only open escape route.

Will Joshi and Manya find one another? Gottlieb Sarles creates a tapestry of characters from every corner of East Prussia, shedding light on an untold tragic moment in history.

Wow, what a wild ride
By susan brody
I absolutely loved reading this book. It is told with such beauty yet, it is also very real and even shocking. It had to be told honestly but with such interesting character studies, it just flowed. This book would be such an amazing movie. I am so caught up in their lives , I want more!

A Compelling Story of the Prussian People in World War II
By W. R. Epperly
I recently read this book, and it was a very rewarding experience. While I have been a student of World War II, I was not aware of the plight of the Prussian people. It is important that we know this story in order to have a more complete picture of the horror of that devastating conflict and of war in general. The author, Marina Gottlieb Sarles, is a wonderful storyteller. She held my interest from beginning to end.

A riveting story of love and war
By Paula F. Boyd
This novel is a page turner, and a chapter of WWII history that I had not known about. It is gripping--haunting even--and equal parts beautiful and heart wrenching. Well written, the author has a way of making you feel as if you've visited this vanished land of East Prussia and its quiet elegance, and also leaves you riveted in terror in the midst of a harrowing escape trek. This historical story, although based on diaries from the author's grandparents, is also timely in today's world ... both a moving reminder of the horrors of war, and ultimately a story of compassion and love and survival that is simply unforgettable.

Review
"I like that the chapters on war are divided into two - conceptually, this helps students break major events into two bits. The Civil War & WWII are divided chronologically, and WWI is divided by foreign & domestic activity which is nice for a short period of American involvement."

"The opening quotes for each chapter set the tone--a technique I already use to illicit discussion and critical thinking in my classes. Photo captions and sidebars are illuminating and seem to answer the questions students did not realize they needed to ask [e.g. p.464 sidebar on Lady Homesteaders.] They take students into the era rather than keep them as outsiders looking in--a shot of whimsy to lighten the rest of the load."

"I like the organization and the philosophy as I have stated above. I also like the "bite-sized" chapters and the "How They Lived" and "sidebars" within the chapters. Many students have short attention spans. They should not have a problem using this textbook."

"The boxed features in the chapters provide fascinating insights and little known facts for the student. They are a definite strength of this textbook and are real "gems"."

"[Regarding "How They Lived" and sidebar features] I loved them! I looked forward to them. I even made a point to look in other chapters to see what he had included."

Engaging, Fun to Read, May be Trivial
By R
I've used it in 10th grade high school class and now I am a junior in college. I do not know if it was the teacher or the book, but it remains as my favorite history class ever. I remember most of the materials in this book better than things I've learned from other history courses I took last semester. This book is the only textbook I still have from high school.

Fact: Author has voice
Pro:
The author is witty and makes the book interesting. The characters (historical figures) come alive and I could clearly imagine in my head Andrew Jackson in this political campaign, and Henry Clay in midst of tension between Senate & House of Reps. Makes it easier to remember the facts.
Con:
Is it a truly good thing for a history textbook to have a voice? The author seems to be biased towards certain characters more than the others and this shows since he actually lets out his voice in the book. This would make the book a good side-book to have along with another textbook, or a good read for a reader already knowledgeable about US history.
Also, because he lets his opinion sneak out in between the lines, sometimes there are too many trivial facts that may not be necessary in an intro course.

5 Stars because I absolutely love this book, even the trivial parts-- I still remember random facts from the book because they are just very interesting. I hated history before this textbook, and now I got to love it. I am now able to understand (or at least attempt to understand) the motives behind historical figures and the current & pattern in history, rather than simply memorizing dates and trial names.

Easy to read/understand, great layout
By (Un)QualifiedTeach
I enjoyed the layout and order of delivery this book offered. This would be a great book for learning as well as brushing up on your history during this time. It brushes the events, and certain box 'bubbles,' and visuals help piece it together. Great layout and delivery. Would suggest!

Missing details
By W. Humphrys
I was very annoyed at how little information was in this book. I felt like my 5th history book had far more information and this is supposed to be for college students. I think the Tenn Tech program for history is a joke if this is what the state requires they use.
