Review
"I like that the chapters on war are divided into two - conceptually, this helps students break major events into two bits. The Civil War & WWII are divided chronologically, and WWI is divided by foreign & domestic activity which is nice for a short period of American involvement."
"The opening quotes for each chapter set the tone--a technique I already use to illicit discussion and critical thinking in my classes. Photo captions and sidebars are illuminating and seem to answer the questions students did not realize they needed to ask [e.g. p.464 sidebar on Lady Homesteaders.] They take students into the era rather than keep them as outsiders looking in--a shot of whimsy to lighten the rest of the load."
"I like the organization and the philosophy as I have stated above. I also like the "bite-sized" chapters and the "How They Lived" and "sidebars" within the chapters. Many students have short attention spans. They should not have a problem using this textbook."
"The boxed features in the chapters provide fascinating insights and little known facts for the student. They are a definite strength of this textbook and are real "gems"."
"[Regarding "How They Lived" and sidebar features] I loved them! I looked forward to them. I even made a point to look in other chapters to see what he had included."

Engaging, Fun to Read, May be Trivial
By R
I've used it in 10th grade high school class and now I am a junior in college. I do not know if it was the teacher or the book, but it remains as my favorite history class ever. I remember most of the materials in this book better than things I've learned from other history courses I took last semester. This book is the only textbook I still have from high school.
Fact: Author has voice
Pro:
The author is witty and makes the book interesting. The characters (historical figures) come alive and I could clearly imagine in my head Andrew Jackson in this political campaign, and Henry Clay in midst of tension between Senate & House of Reps. Makes it easier to remember the facts.
Con:
Is it a truly good thing for a history textbook to have a voice? The author seems to be biased towards certain characters more than the others and this shows since he actually lets out his voice in the book. This would make the book a good side-book to have along with another textbook, or a good read for a reader already knowledgeable about US history.
Also, because he lets his opinion sneak out in between the lines, sometimes there are too many trivial facts that may not be necessary in an intro course.
5 Stars because I absolutely love this book, even the trivial parts-- I still remember random facts from the book because they are just very interesting. I hated history before this textbook, and now I got to love it. I am now able to understand (or at least attempt to understand) the motives behind historical figures and the current & pattern in history, rather than simply memorizing dates and trial names.

Easy to read/understand, great layout
By (Un)QualifiedTeach
I enjoyed the layout and order of delivery this book offered. This would be a great book for learning as well as brushing up on your history during this time. It brushes the events, and certain box 'bubbles,' and visuals help piece it together. Great layout and delivery. Would suggest!

Missing details
By W. Humphrys
I was very annoyed at how little information was in this book. I felt like my 5th history book had far more information and this is supposed to be for college students. I think the Tenn Tech program for history is a joke if this is what the state requires they use.
